Cut to the Chase (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Stalter, Todd
In popular jargon, the phrase "cut to the chase" means to get to the really interesting or important point, and leave out all that is unnecessary. It originated from early cinematic lore when silent films were full of romantic story lines that inevitably led to much more exciting and memorable chase sequences. In this work, the melodic fragments are tossed around the band to give the impression that everyone is being chased or chasing something. To pay homage to the phrase's past, the frantic atmosphere stops for an obligatory inclusion of a slow, romantic chord progression with a soaring melody, and then the chase resumes, building to a rousing conclusion.Duration: 2:30

Hymn to the Beauty That Was (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Russell Bate, Jane
This stunning lyrical composition is truly something special. Hymn to the Beauty That Was is a moving ballad which adds harp (or synthesizer) to the band, and features soloists on flute, English horn (or alto sax), and euphonium. The piece builds to a powerful and emotional climax as the three main musical elements (the women's theme, the hymn melody, and an accompanying triplet figure) are woven together.Duration: 6.30

Mirage (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob
A mirage is an illusion, something without substance that does not really exist. Although not real, its unattainable nature is perfect for musical inspiration. Composer Jacob de Haan was strolling through a picturesque forest of the Dutch Gelderland when he thought he saw a body of water. While there was no water, its mere image created waves that can be relived in De Haan's original composition, Mirage.Duration: 3.00

Kingdom Adventures (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Hinkel, Joshua
We can all recall family adventures and outings throughout our childhood that led us to enchanting and magical places where the impossible came to life and reality seemed like only a distant memory. Kingdom Adventures is an exciting composition that portrays the youthful spirit of exploring a magical kingdom, and reminds us of the careless wonders and experiences that highlight the memories of childhood. As you enter the kingdom, the majestic walls protect the stoic castle that stands in the midst of the kingdom. Inside the castle, every twist and turn of the castle's hallways offers the possibility of something amazingly new and exciting. One cannot help but to be transported into another place and time as they experience all that the magical kingdom has to offer!Duration: 2.15

Stay Cool (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Gassi, Vince
If cool is what you're looking for, you just found it! A simple, yet effective descending line in the lower voices of the band decides to "hang out" with a very hip melodic "hook" offered by the upper affiliates. Reverse rolls for the bridge, add in some harmony in 4ths, and the result is a level of cool your band and audiences will not soon forget. Everyone has something to say in this partnership in the study of cool.Duration: 3.15

Elgar Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin
The year 2007 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the British composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) and as such I thought it an appropriate moment to write something in tribute to this event. There are quite a few enigmas about this piece and they are all intentional! First and foremost is that the variations are not constructed on any of Elgar's actual themes. Rather I have written a sequence of contrasting sections (all played without a break) on the essence and character of his musical style. I have also written this work with bands, the soloists within, conductors and, not least, their audience firmly in mind. The language is essentially tonal and the test musical rather than overtly technical. There are no tempo indications other than suggested metronome marks. I have deliberately kept things to a minimum as the true test here is to find the style and interpret that aspect over the whole structure. Whereas the faster sections are more or less self explanatory the slower parts require deliberate rubato and much feeling. This is for the conductors to discover and I encourage them to do so. Adjudicators should be fully aware that I sanction this aspect but it requires an insight and understanding to successfully execute so 'any old thing' will not suffice! The 'variation' commencing at rehearsal letter P is the emotional core of the piece and requires a passionate but not saccharine approach to pacing and sensuality. The cadenza type material is built into the process rather than being a separate sequence of entities. There are many allusions to the music of Elgar here without recourse to blatant pastiche - if it is thought of as a series of songs and dances this may help. The final comment is the dedication, after one of Elgar's own but subtly adjusted: to my friend pictured within - never to be revealed - now there's an enigma!- Martin EllerbyDuration: 14.00Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM155D Scenes from Childhood (Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.15), Royal Northern College of Music Wind Orchestra
