Score only. Of all dragon species, the habits of the ice dragon, hidden away in its mountain fastness, are the least known. Spending most of their lives deep below ground in vast caverns they venture abroad very rarely. Fiercely territorial, encounters with others of their kind precipitate conflict, both immediate and violent. Those few people who have witnessed such encounters, and survived them, liken them to a kind of frenetic dance, hence the title of the piece. Heavily armed, intelligent creatures, the contests are highly ritualised. The frantic pace and intensity of the encounters mean they ten to be brief, ending with one, or often both beasts, crashing into the mountain side, causing a huge avalanche htat invariably marks the end of the encounter. Extra score only. As the title suggests, Festivo is a festive piece, exuberant in style and lasting some six minutes. Throughout, there is much emphasis on rhythm and the scoring utilises many solo and chamber-like textures. It is cast in rondo form with a longish introduction which announces in fragmented form some of the main ideas. The main theme is light-hearted and exuberant, heard first on clarinets but immediately tossed around the band. The first episode starts quietly but gradually adds layer upon layer of repeated fragments until the whole band is heard. The final statement of the rondo tune is heralded by Tubular Bells and bell-like chords on the brass, after which a short coda brings the work to an exciting conclusion. Duration: 6:00
