Kodama - Bell
Experience the beauty of the Japanese countryside in this lyrical work depicting the forest spirits called Kodama. Shintoism believes that everything from pebbles, animals, and plants, to forces of nature like the wind or a river contains a distinct spiritual essence or kami. It teaches a respect and reverence for everything in the natural world. Kodama captures this essence, making heavy of use of pentatonic scales associated with Japanese folk music and emulating the style that makes it so unique. A beautiful and picturesque work!

The Caravan Club - Karl L. King
The great Karl King wrote many wonderful marches, and "The Caravan Club" is one of his most interesting and unusual works. Heavy and ponderous at times, light and frisky at others, this march was used often in the circus to accompany tiger acts. An ominous introduction leads to a lumbering first strain, followed by a delightful contrasting, almost ragtime-like second strain. The trio features a wonderful melody with euphonium countermelody, in the style made so famous by King. The weighty breakstrain returns to a minor key feel, and then concludes with an embellished version of the trio. One of the march "King's" very best! Immense!

Ornamento - Timothy Travis
A little work almost begging to be kissed ! So deceptively simple but because of that also containing a good many of the well-known snakes in the grass. The work was premiered as a warm-up for a contest, but it may be played in many ways in various occasions. Whiffs of baroque and pinches of romanticism melt in this little contemporary work. Een beeldschoon werkje, refererend aan de barok en de romantiek. Zeer geschikt als inspeelwerk voor een concours/festival of als rustpunt tijdens een concert.

Goldene Kameraden - James Barnes
"Goldene Kameraden" was commissioned to celebrate the 50th anniversary of Musikverlag RUNDEL. The title of the piece is a combination of the golden anniversary of the company and all my friends who work there - but it is also a humorous pun on one of my favorite German marches: "Alte Kameraden". Although marches are rather out of favor in the U.S. these days - unless they are by John Philip Sousa - I love to write them. And so I was happy to have the opportunity to compose this for Thomas Rundel, his family and the team at Musikverlag RUNDEL. The strict form of marches and the necessary march-like clichs required may seem restricting to other composers, but I perceive this as a musical challenge. It is like completing a crossword puzzle: one must go by all the traditional rules" but still produce something creative.

Marco Polo (French text) - Antonio Rossi
Marco Polo (Venice, 1254), son of Venetian merchants, left in 1271 with his father Niccol and his uncle Matteo, towards the distant China at the court of the Mongol emperor Kublai Khan. The long journey, which lasted three and a half years, led the Polos to cross Turkey, Central Asia, the Pamir, and the Gobi desert. The intelligence of the young Marco and his curiosity towards new customs and languages raises the interest of the emperor so much that he decides to keep him at his court by appointing him ambassador. This assignment takes him to newly conquered southern China and other parts of southern Asia. In 1292, the Great Kublai Khan agrees, albeit reluctantly, to let him go.Marco, after 17 years at his service, can finally return to Venice, but not before completing a last mission for the Grand Khan: accompanying his niece, Princess Kokachin, to Persia, where she would marry. A few years after his arrival in Venice, Marco finds himself involved in a naval battle against the Genoese people in which the Venetians are defeated. Consequently, Marco is captured and taken to prison in Genoa. There, he meets the storyteller Rustichello da Pisa to whom he tells the story of his adventurous journey. After his release, Marco returned to Venice and led a comfortable life until his death in 1324.

Blues for Big Ears - Mark Nightingale
Blues for Big Ears is one of Mark Nightingales' Easy Jazzy Tudes, one of Warwick Music's bestselling publications. The band arrangement came about as a result of a stroke of inspiration. After teaching the piece to pupils the idea to arrange it for band was formed. The solo in the middle can be read, or if you have a budding player who likes to improvise feature them. The quavers throughout should not be swung! The Tubas and instruments playing the bass part, should aim for a light sound, and try to imitate the sound of a double bass playing pizziccato. As there are easy parts attached, band directors can include their youngest players, so they don't feel left out. If you have a good drummer, get him to improvise during the fills, rather than read the notated part.

Meramec Rhapsody - Claude T. Smith
This work is a commission by the Missouri Bandmasters Association to honor the 50th Anniversary of the MMEA. From the opening melody stated by unison flutes, 1st clarinet and 1st trumpet, the work quickly starts through a development of that melody that only this composer does so well. The writing is very "rubato" chorale style often interrupted with short allegro sections but always returning to the opening statement. There is a short flute solo passage as well as a very fluent alto sax solo. A dramatic piece that bands will enjoy playing for years to come.

Where Falcons Soar - Christian Earl
Here is a piece certain to be a success! It is so musical it will be enjoyed by good high school, college, and adult bands; yet it is easy enough that a good junior high or middle school band can be successful with it. Employing a joyous, rhythmic triple meter, the piece gets off to a frollicking good start. The opening section leads to a beautiful, slower, melodic section, and the work concludes with vigor and vitality as it romps to an exciting conclusion.
