This composition is based on the hymn Aberystwyth, named after a seaside town on the west coast of Wales. It is Jacob de Haan's favourite hymn from the 120 Hymns for Brass Band. The work consists of three continuous movements in which the theme of Aberystwyth comes forward in a variety of attractive ways, so that it forms a variegated whole which is captivating to players and listeners alike. This arrangement was made after hearing Astor Piazzolla s 1986 recording of his own work written in 1965. The original instrumentation of bandoneon, violin and string bass is here arranged for three wind soloists with Concert Band. The Soprano Sax is the main soloist (filling the bandoneon role), while the trombone and clarinet shares the violin part as a kind of flirting undertone to the soprano saxophone. It s not possible to make a 100% correct notation of the solo parts, so it s recommended to listen to the record album Zero Hour from 1986 to get the best impression of the work. A vibrant, rhythmic solo for trombone and band. La Chica sin Nombre was written in March 2020 at the request of Brett Baker. He wanted something in Latin style so I chose to go for a Mambo-type dance piece. This obviously works best with band accompaniment where I would always ask for Conga drums and Mambo Bell/Timbales rather than drum kit. The piece needs to be played with an appropriate feel for Latin music. It should sound light and easy to play but has a few tricky moments! Duration: 4.15

Though never before published, The New Spirit of '76 march is perhaps Katheryn McCall Noblitt's best known piece, and was among her favorites. Originally composed in 1947 as a piano solo, in 1975, in anticipation of our nation's Bicentennial celebration, she composed a second-piano part for two additional players, wrote patriotic words in both two-part and four-part harmony. The melodies are so well-crafted that they seem very familiar. This arrangement includes short quotations from other Bicentennial favorites - The Star-Spangled Banner, Battle Hymn of the Republic, Dixie, and Yankee Doodle. Dr. Noble directed its premiere performance in 1976 during a music festival, followed by performances with the 500-member Virginia Bicentennial Band and Marching Chorus in Philadelphia, Washington, Alexandria and other cities.

This vivacious programme number was written for Barnaby (more often known as Barney), Simba's (see At The 'Splash' with Sim) predecessor in the composer's Golden Retriever succession. He was a very laid back and happy soul, not the brightest-ever retriever, but with the potential for a little mischief when the mood took him. It was written with the intention of being eminently playable so both the range and the technical demands are carefully controlled and the scoring is designed to make the music sound strong with a band of less experienced players.
