Five Mississippi Rush (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Taylor, Clifton
Beginning with a snare riff based on this audible football chant, the content of "Five Mississippi Rush" is inspired by its title. A five-Mississippi rush is often used in pickup football games where there is no offensive line and the defense has to count five "Mississippis" before rushing the quarterback. Cliff Taylor's use of five-note motives and five-element phrases combine with the melodic and harmonic language of the blues that is rooted in the State of Mississippi. This engaging work will appeal to both performers and audiences. Exhilarating throughout! Duration: 5.00

A Moorside March (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Brand, Michael
Holst composed A Moorside Suite for Brass Band in 1928. It is in three movements, this March being preceded by a Scherzo and Nocturne. It is an extraordinary mature work for band from a master composer. There is very little fortissimo writing and there are no semiquavers at all. Instead, Holst has written clean melodic lines with each part being woven into a texture based on the modal lines of English folk music; but these represent its stylistic origin rather than using actual folk tunes as in Holst's earlier band writing. The March is stirring and flowing and is an ideal standalone piece to open or close any concert or festival programme. Duration: 4.15

Tigerstaden (The City of Oslo March) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Strand, Oyvind
The expression comes from the great poet Bjornstjerne Bjornson where he in the poem Siste sang (Last song) describes a battle between a tiger and a horse. The tiger symbolizes the big city (Oslo) while the horse symbolizes the countryside, ie the traditional battle city vs country. Hence Oslo (Kristiania) got the negative nickname Tigerstaden (Tiger City), but as time went on, the name established itself as something positive and familiar, and has become a beloved nickname, without negative associations, in the Capital. Labyrinth for Symphonic Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Aagaard-Nilsen, Torstein
I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. This edition is a revised version made in 2020. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. Duration: 23.00

Serenade (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Bourgeois, Derek - Brand, Michael
Derek Bourgeois wrote this Serenad for his own wedding, to be played by the organist as the guests left the church ceremony. Not wishing his wife and guests to process out in an orderly 2/4, he surprised everyone by starting the piece in 11/8 and in case anyone began to feel too comfortable, he chaged to 13/8 in the middle! The work has now been released in a number of different orchestration and this one for 6 Part Flexible Ensemble will hopefully enable a greater number of ensembles and audiences to enjoy this delightful and popular miniature. The End of a Love Affair (Flexible Instrument Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Grottum, Kare - Kjaernes, Bjorn Morten
Kare Grottum is known to most as a pianist and producer by NRK. He was involved in numerous TV productions, both as producer, musician, composer, and arranger. This tune is taken from a CD released in 1992, Fra en musikers dagbok where he brings with him several Norwegian soloists of international class. It is Erling Wicklund who does a brilliant solo on Flugabone which has also used as a starting point for the written improvisation. The arrangement should be played in a slightly swinging way, but not as much as a jazz waltz. Play with the straight eighths and then let it flow, with a faint two against three feeling, which clearly shows up in some places. If you do not have bassoon and oboe, let alto sax and tenor sax make up the duet from 9. Enjoy! Solo Options: C BC Instruments; Bb TC Instruments; Eb TC Instruments. Duration: 4.15
