Rhapsody (Flugel Horn or Trumpet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Waignein, Andre
As a trumpet player Andre Waignein has composed many pieces for this instrument; extremely electrifying pieces meant for young trumpet-players, and more demanding works for professionals. With his rhapsody Andre Waignein wanted to compose a piece in which spontaneity dominates and in which the virtuosity, sonority and style of the soloist is featured to its maximum. Although the piece is not one of the most difficult, it nevertheless places high musical demands on the soloist. Following an impressive orchestral opening the soloist comes to the fore, with long phrases followed by more dynamic and rhythmic passages. The second movement gives evidence of extreme sensitivity and offers the soloist the opportunity to prove that the trumpet (flugel horn) can be a stirring and emotional instrument. The third movement is the most spectacular. The orchestra actively participates with increasingly delicate interventions. The soloist can display all the possibilities offered to him by his instrument. With a long sostenuto on the trumpet (flugel horn) the beautiful rhapsody ends.Duration: 6:00

El Golpe Fatal (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Brosse, Dirk
With the sound of trumpets and a long drum roll Dirk Bross takes you to the splendour of the opening ceremony of a bullfight! The rhythm and the use of South American percussion instruments convey a festive atmosphere whilst broad lines and bright colours describe the solemn nature of this event. The imaginary bull is received with great acclaim with the full band playing. Two contrasting themes represent the heroic matador and the condemned bull. The audience cheers as the bull collapses and strong final chords round off the triumph of the matador. The final quiet notes give a feeling of melancholy reflecting the sad end of this story.Duration: 13:45

Jig (from St. Paul's Suite) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - De Meij, Johan
Together with his good friend Ralph Vaughan Williams, Gustav Holst had a strong liking for the abundant folk music of the British Isles. This influence is heard in many of his works and is perhaps strongest in his Second Suite for Military Band and in the Saint Paul Suite for string orchestra. This work was composed in 1913 for the school orchestra of St. Paul's Girls School in London, where Holst was the Director of Music. The suite opens with this exuberant Jig, a dance originating from Scottish and Irish folk music in alternating duple and triple time (6/8 and 9/8), which has been expertly arranged for concert band. Loch Ness (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
A Scottish Fantasy. The symphonic poem Loch Ness consists of five through-composed impressions of this mysterious Scottish Lake. I) The Lake at Dawn - calm, static, sonorous blocks depict the troubled opaque water surface and the enormous depth of the Lake at daybreak. II) Slowly the rising early-morning mist reveals the distant ruins of Urquhart Castle, represented by a solemn theme in the trombones which is taken over by the full band, thus evoking the illustrious past of this fortress besieged so many times. III) Inverness: Bagpipes and Tourists - the music takes us down to the town of Inverness where the first tourists mark the slow but steady start of a new season to the sound of a Scottishmelody. IV) Storm - suddenly a heavy wheater breaks: fierce gusts of wind and heavy showers transform the erstwhile calm surface into an obscure and whirling mass of water, and clouds rapidly passing over offer an eery scene. V) Conclusion - storm and rain gradually decrease and when everything is quiet again we are granted a last view of the Lake in its full glory. Duration: 12.15

Suite Provencale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
This 4-movement suite is based on authentic folk tunes from the beautiful southern province in France: the "Provence". The composer used an harmonic language respecting the popular characteristics, but on the other hand also contains some "spicy" notes (...just like the well known "Provencal sauce"!...). The instrumentation is very colourful, paying a lot of attention to the different timbres of both brass and wood winds as well as to the percussion section. Every movement has its own character: "Un Ange a fa la crido" (= An angel brought the creed/credo) is like a bourree, "Adam e sa Coumpagnou" (= Adam and his companion) is an old love song, "Lou Fustie" (= the carpenter) a fast dance and finally "Lis Escoubo" (= a whistle tune / popular ballad) is a farandole. In the latter, the old tradition of folk musicians who play a whistle with one hand and a drum with the other hand, is clearly represented during the first presentations of the one and only theme)Although this piece is not too demanding, a well balanced band is necessary to perform it successfully. Thanks to the contrasts and the varying colours, it keeps on holding the attention.Duration: 7:15

Spartacus (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan
Spartacus is a "Symphonic Tone Poem" with 3 joints. Each section has its own melodical materials, however: in the final movement the main theme from the second section returns in a 'grandioso'-tutti. The last bar but one recaptures the 'oriental' atmosphere of the very beginning. The first section (= from the beginning till J) builds up a climax by repeating and accumulating some melodical and rhythmical structures. The oriental character of the melodical fragments refers to the origin of the Roman slaves. The second section evokes the love between Spartacus and his love by giving a peaceful atmosphere. The mean theme (presented the first time at letter L) has a broad and wide character and refers slightly to film music. In this part of the composition, a special attention is given to the orchestration. The final section is more aggressive and martial and refers to the revolt of the slaves against the Roman oppressors. In the middle of this movement, an accumulation of the 12 tones symbolises the crucifixion of the slaves: the english horn resumes partly the cadenza of the flute (at letter J), as if he wants to show again the eternal love between Spartacus and his love a very last time ... The theme at the third bar of letter T is actually based on the 2nd theme of this section (which starts at the fifth bar of letter R), but has been worked out rhythmically.Duration: 13:50
