Ceremonial March (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar's music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death in 1984 he composed the "Ceremonial March". Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar's catalogue of works, the characteristic "Pomp and Circumstances" marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.Duration: 5:30

RUNCORN BRIDGE (Professional Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Carpenter, Gary

The through-arch bridge that is visible for miles across the Cheshire Gap is one of two adjacent bridges that cross both the River Mersey and Manchester Ship Canal. Its formal name is the Silver Jubilee Bridge is more usually known as the Runcorn Bridge. Runcorn Bridge begins with a brief, quiet, introduction featuring an oboe solo. There follows a lively march at the end of which a reflective interlude (or bridge!) based upon the tune that occurs twice in the march leads to a lyrical, almost nocturnal section spotlighting the alto saxophone. A variant of the first interlude leads to a scherzo-like section kicked off by the euphonium with a 'trio' that contains a Latin-inflected version of the oboe melody first heard in the introduction. A third interlude variant heralds a return of the nocturnal melody firstly as a horn solo but subsequently returning to the alto saxophone. Previous melodic materials gradually combine as an extended crescendo leads to a majestic, but short, coda that in a gesture of symmetrical solidarity refers back to the march tune utilised in the earlier interludes. Duration: 10:30. Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM160D Bells Across the Atlantic.

Scherzpolka (Concert Band - Score and Parts)

In the somewhat sarcastic Scherzpolka (Joke Polka), the composer does not intend to make fun of Alpine traditions and music but rather of the typical social attitude that does not always do justice to the valuable folk music and culture. Imagine a band that has to play in a beer tent for hours. During the performance the guests treat the musicians to one beer after another. Gradually, the players and the conductor lose control over their instruments and their interpretation of the music. Finally, the performance comes to an end: the Scherzpolka is actually the last piece. There are no limits to the creativity in both the visual and musical aspects during a performance of the Scherzpolka! 02:30

Tom Sawyer Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

During his childhood The Adventures of Tom Sawyer was the favourite book of the composer Franco Cesarini. With his memories of the magic of joy, fear and freedom, Cesarini seeks to bring the figures of the book to life musically in his Tom Sawyer Suite. Each of the first four movements describes a figure from the story. Tom Sawyer is depicted in the first movement, where the characteristic "cake walk" rhythm is used. The second movement depicts Huckleberry Finn. The third movement is slower, more expressively melancholic and is dedicated to Becky Thatcher. Then there is Injun Joe, who tries to catch Tom in the fourth movement with the fifth movement leading to a happy end.Duration: 12:00

    In Stillness - Kenley Kristofferson

by Kenley Kristofferson reaches for that which is greater than ourselves. It may be one god or many gods, or it may be greatness of the past or future, but it is the light that is just beyond our mortal reach. This piece starts slowly and grows in intensity over time until the glorious climax, after which it relaxes in tone and volume before reaching a short final section of quiet tension. This ends with warm tonic chord, signifying the light that greets all of us at the end.

    Tropanka and Patsh Tantz

This two-movement work is sure to be a hit at your next concert! The first movement, Tropanka (pronounced "tro-PAHN-kuh"), translates as "stomping dance" and originated in Bulgaria. One can hear two repeated notes at the end of each phrase - this is where the dancers stomp! The second movement, Patsh Tantz (pronounced "PAHTSH tahnts") is a classic example of Klezmer, or Eastern European Jewish folk music. The title of this movement is Yiddish for "clapping dance", and all the players get the chance to clap at certain points in their individual parts. Both movements should be played rhythmically; adding weight to many of the downbeats will help bring out the "earthy" character of the music.

    Waves of the Revolution

O'Loughlin's tribute to New Hampshire's contribution to the Revolutionary War features glorious brass fanfares, blossoming woodwinds and exciting scoring for the percussion section. An aggressive theme in a minor key is the basis for this contest style piece, which is symphonic in nature. The combination of the themes towards the end of the piece brings it to an exciting conclusion.

Heaven Near the Earth - Afonso Alves

Heaven Near the Earth is a composition by Afonso Alves inspired by the belief that there is a paradise for the soul when the body dies. But as long as we live, it is in our hands to build paradise on earth. The 1st movement is epic with contrasting textures, with the brass section entering into an intense dialogue with the forest. The 2nd movement is quiet, recited, engaging all instruments in colourful sections. The 3rd movement is light and bright, with a melodic ostinato in crescendo until the finale, which creates great tension until the end of the composition. An excellent option for the opening of a concert.

The Eagle's Quest was commissioned by Brevik Musikkorps (Norway) to mark the 400th anniversary of the birth of Cort Adeler, a renowned Norwegian-Dutch sailor who was born in the town of Brevik in 1622. His Dutch name Adelaer means 'eagle'. This work celebrates his life but is not programmatic, simply reflecting Brevik's pride in one of its most famous sons. Towards the end of the piece there is a brief quotation from the town song, Brevikssangen, which is a fitting and captivating conclusion.
