The Homefront: Musical Memories from World War II
With the recent anniversary of the end of World War II, Americans have reflected on that special era in our history, a time when popular music played such an important role in the national consciousness. This outstanding showcase for band spotlights some of the fabulous songs of that era including: Thanks for the Memory, Don't Sit Under the Apple Tree, I'll Be Seeing You, It's Been a Long Long Time, Bell-Bottom Trousers, White Clifs of Dover, and Praise the Lord And Pass the Ammunition.

In Stillness - Kenley Kristofferson
by Kenley Kristofferson reaches for that which is greater than ourselves. It may be one god or many gods, or it may be greatness of the past or future, but it is the light that is just beyond our mortal reach. This piece starts slowly and grows in intensity over time until the glorious climax, after which it relaxes in tone and volume before reaching a short final section of quiet tension. This ends with warm tonic chord, signifying the light that greets all of us at the end.

And Birds Will Sing Again - Jeff Smallman
This lyric tune is taken from a musical entitled All's Fair, written by the composer. Set during the Second World War, this song is sung in memory of friends and family who have been lost in battle. Flutes and bells, and later the baritone, play the melody during the verses while the trumpets are given the melody during the refrains. This piece begins quietly, builds slowly through to the end of the second chorus, then quietly winds its way through the last few phrases.

Golden Lullaby (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This lyrical little piece started life as a song on the subject of gold but I wanted to see if it would stand alone as an instrumental piece. The gentle lilt of the melody suggests a lullaby although the texture of the piece builds in an un-lullaby-like fashion towards the end. There is a little 'white-note' dissonance but it is basically traditional in its language. Duration: 3.40

Pure Imagination (from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Bricusse & Newley - Wagner, Douglas E.
With its message of endless possibilities and dreams fulfilled, this piece, from the 1971 Academy-award nominated film score of Roald Dahl's Charlie and the Chocolate Factory (1964), by song writing team Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley, has remained popular since the 1970s. The tune surfaces three times in the movie, first during the opening title music, then as the feature number by Gene Wilder as he leads his assembled golden ticket winners into the chocolate room, and finally, as part of the "Wonkavator" music at the end. Great fun for all generations, and all generations to come! This arrangement provides a dramatic opportunity to teach expression. A charming and musical choice, it is memorable and heart-warming.Duration: 2:45

Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Sparke, Philip
The Irish folk tune, which appears towards the end of the piece, is Slane, a hymn tune version of the much older folk melody The Banks of the Bann. In Prelude on an Irish Folk Tune, fragments of the folk tune hint at what is to come later in the piece, but another folk-like tune is predominant. This later acts as a descant to Slane when it finally appears. Add a little Sparke sparkle to any concert with this lovely interlude.Duration: 4:00

Waves of the Revolution
O'Loughlin's tribute to New Hampshire's contribution to the Revolutionary War features glorious brass fanfares, blossoming woodwinds and exciting scoring for the percussion section. An aggressive theme in a minor key is the basis for this contest style piece, which is symphonic in nature. The combination of the themes towards the end of the piece brings it to an exciting conclusion.

Majesty (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Deleruyelle, Thierry
Majesty is a powerful and spectacular overture. Right from the start, the brass open the work brilliantly before making way for a majestic hymn mostly played by the woodwind. The end of the piece repeats the opening fanfare as a monumental finale in the style of an American symphonic march. This work was commissioned by the Bourbourg Wind Orchestra (France), conducted by Claude Deconinck, on the occasion of its 230th anniversary. This piece was premiered by the commissioning orchestra on 19 November 2022, just two months after the death of Queen Elizabeth II. Naturally, this work is dedicated to her.Duration: 6.15
