Galactic Conflict - Timothy Loest
This invigorating work makes great use of percussion. Reminiscent of Holst's famous portrayal of Mars, the driving rhythmic motif is immediately introduced with rhythmic hits reinforced in the upper brass and woodwinds. Several themes are layered for an effect that is easy to achieve with bands at this level. A brief lyrical section provides some creative harmonies which will help develop the musicianship of your band. The opening material then returns for a powerful conclusion. Highly recommended!

Harrie Janssen composed Analecta Varia in memory of Henk van Lijnschooten (1928-2006). He has been of great influence on the Dutch music for wind instruments. As a conductor and as a member of the jury, but above all as a prominent composer. Consists of eight sound studies that can also be performed separately. In each part a particular orchestral aspect is the central point. The eight parts 1. Choral: ensemble in monophonic texture. 2. Air: relatively free line patterns combined with a constant pulse. 3. Pavana: constant rhythmicity culminating in an orchestral tutti. 4. Lullaby: dissonant harmonyabove an organ point in a filigree instrumentation. 5. Chaconne: color and virtuosity combined with a rigid pasacaglian theme. 6. Interlude: antithesis woodwind/brass and followed by a synthesis of the before. 7. Fugue: ensemble in a polyphonic texture. 8. Epilogue: final canto in a preponderating strong dynamic, where a constant euphony has to be pursued.

Here's a marvelous arrangement featuring the engaging sounds of folk music from Sweden. It opens with a brief fanfare followed by In The Summer The Sun Shines So Clearly. After the lovely 3/4 melody Flowers Of Joy, Eric alternateswoodwind and brass choirs on the dignified O Varmland. The lively song My Love Like A Dainty Shepherdess is written in 3/4 for ease of reading, and the medley concludes with a majestic setting of The King. Well scored with plentyof variety.

Nearly 400 years ago (in 1609) Henry Hudson and his ship, the Half Moon, explored the majestic river that was later to bear his name. Half Moon on the Hudson pays tribute to this area of New York and the spirit of exploration and adventure. A regal fanfare announces the beginning of the work, followed by an energetic and rhythmic section that features various sections of the band answering one another. An emotional and chorale-like middle section provides a calmer mood along with lush harmonizations. This has become a Christmas song that has its roots in a love duet between the young Fleksnes and classmate Victoria. The class will be competing with a duet in a song competition. The text gives hope of love and links it to Christmas traditions. "A Dream of Christmas, About Love" is the first line of the text. "The Young Fleksnes" runned as advent calender on TV Norge in 2010. This arrangement feature an Alto Saxophone player and a euphonium / baritone / trombone player. If you should choose to use the soloist parts from the Brass band version for Flugelhorn and Euphonium, please use both parts, because some of the phrases has been changed. Please be aware of thedynamics between soloists and accompaniment. Adjust the dynamics according to the musicians in the ensemble.

The fanfare begins with three or more antiphonal brass players placed throughout the concert hall. Large percussion forces, which includes optional parts, are used to help introduce the rest of the ensemble as they join in the musical celebration. As the full ensemble joins in, the combined efforts of all the performers coalesce into an overwhelming expression of unbridled musical joy.

This pulsating composition transforms the various attributes of electricity into musical sounds. Reverberating ostinatos in the bass line represent crackling bursts of current while intricate moving lines of woodwinds and mallet percussion reflect the motion of electrons darting about. Adding to the overall effect are sounds of intense lightning strikes provided by thick and explosive low brass chords while the percussion section generates electrical energy sounds throughout.
