Named for a volcano on the Hawaiian island of Maui, Haleakala is a boldly conceived and sumptuously scored tribute to the wonder of nature. A series of brilliant fanfares, with prominent use of the brass section, leads to a broad chorale theme for the wind section that soon acquires a noble counter melody from the horn choir. After a splendidly sonorous climax, the fanfare material returns to close the piece in a grand style. This selection will work particularly well as a concert opener.

He makes striking and effective use of the low brass and percussion, but the woodwinds are also given a lovely, lyrical idea in the contrasting middle section. French Chanson, arranged by Steven J. Pyter, is a rousing arrangement of a famous 16th-century choral work. The tuneful Renaissance art song tells a light-hearted story of gossip and rumor, with lyrics roughly translating to "I will tell you!" The story centers around a jealous husband suspicious of his beautiful wife. Like opera, the piece employs dramatic and whimsical characteristics to tell a passionate story. This arrangement alternates between tutti statements and short interludes to feature each instrument family in the band---woodwinds, brass, and percussion. The intensity and playfulness make for a great concert opener! (1:40)

This concert march with a solemn and festive character was commissioned to Gauthier Dupertuis by the the Musikkapelle Altheim e.V (Germany) to celebrate its 100th anniversary. The thematic material of the first section of the march is based on a three-note motif, proclaimed by the brass in the first measure. The second part of this theme presents a recurring motif throughout the piece. This first section has a festive and resolutely giocoso character. The trio presents a new, more lyrical and solemn theme. After a short divertimento based on the material from the first section, the theme returns in a majestic way, leading to a climactic finale. Altheim: a concert march perfect for a festive occasion!

Columbus is a brilliant and dynamic overture with a soft and melodious central passage. The composer was inspired by the European space laboratory Columbus that is part of the International Space Station. In this lab, hundreds of scientific experiments are carried out on a yearly basis. This work was commissioned by the Brass Band Bourgueillois, which was founded ten years ago and has since been a 'laboratory' of musical creativity. In response to the many positive reactions to this attractive work, the composer has now also produced a version for concert band.

£252.10The Cosmographic Mystery - Ingebjørg Vilhelmsen
"The Cosmographic Mystery" outlines the great mysteries and secrets of the universe. The musical foundation is a tribute to composer Gustav Holst, and his suite "The Planets". Each movement from the suite is quoted in the course of the piece. The title is taken from a book by the German astronomer Johannes Kepler, which was published in the 17th century. The book explains Kepler's cosmological theory that the distance relationship between the planets could be understood in light of the five Platonic solids. The theory proposes that the solids dictate the structure of the universe through geometry. "The Cosmographic Mystery" is supported by the Norwegian Composers' Fund, and was commissioned by Oslofjord brass.
