This tone poem, suggested by the 4th Century struggle of the Visigoths within the Roman Empire, contrasts the slow opening four-note motive in the low brass, with quicker more rhythmic material depicting the battles of the tribe with the Roman legions. As the title implies, the work expresses the deep religious emotions of the promises made by God to mankind. Two thematic elements are employed: the first, a dramatic proclamation, is introduced by horns and subsequently taken bytrumpets and woodwinds - the second plaintive theme, in the manner of a supplication, is presented by oboes followed by flutes and clarinets. The first theme returns leading to a climactic section by the full ensemble. Adevelopment section focuses on fragments from the principal theme culminating in a brief brass fanfare based on the earlier accompanying motives. The recapitulation of the principal theme brings the work to a quiet and peacefulclose. (8:00)

Firestorm - Stephen Bulla
The inspiration for this piece, commissioned by the United States Army Band, came from the Gulf and its constant presentation to the world as a media event on television. The composer wanted to capture the colour and events of war as they were played out on the television screen. Composed as a single movement rhapsody, the work is framed by the riveting sounds of airborne bombing raids with brass and percussion combining to create a gripping sense of tension.

Mr. Sandman - Pat Ballard
The Emmylou Harris version of Pat Ballard's Mr Sandman was an international hit. In this arrangement Klaas van der Woude shows this song is also perfectly suited for three instrumental soloists (saxophones) with brass band accompaniment. The special close harmony effect is obtained by a tight three-part arrangement of the melody. Effective use of percussion, particularly the vibraphone, gives this version the same feel as the original.
