(2003) Award-winning composer Michael Daugherty's first published work for young band describes a stretch of Interstate 75 that crosses through Florida's Everglades National Park. Alligator Alley celebrates this noble beast that has remained largely unchanged from prehistoric times. The first theme (Alligator's Theme) features the woodwinds (predominantly bassoons) while the second theme (Hunter's Theme) is performed by the brass. Program notes and staging suggestions are included in this marvelously descriptive work. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. Mercury is a concert march composed in a typically British idiom. In 1990, Jan Van der Roost wrote this piece on the occasion of the 15-year anniversary of his own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant. Like many British marches, the main theme is written in a minor key. Powerful and virtuoso themes characterize the first part of this march, while the trio melody is much more melodical, offering the tenor register to display its lyrical skills. Follows a dynamic passage for trombones and trumpets/cornets, leading to a "grandioso" version of the main trio melody and thus concluding this march in a magnificent way.

A rapid flourish in 12/8 time opens composer Otto M. Schwarz' first Concerto for trumpet Trumpet Town, written in October 2009. The metric changes that follow affect the pulse rhythmically and melodically, in exciting and unexpected ways. The solo trumpet's displays of technical prowess and bravura alternate with the film-score-like tutti sections of the brass ensemble. The slow, almost elegiac, central section can be performed on the flugelhorn, while the closing reprise demands that both the soloist and the orchestra give of their best as the piece comes to an exciting, colourful, and uplifting finale. High Voltage - Thierry Deleruyelle
High Voltage is an especially energetic composition in the big band style. The blaring brass and the ornate interplay of the woodwinds lend this work great character and conviction. In the second half of the piece two solos are played: firstly the tenor saxophone (alternatively alto saxophone), followed by a virtuoso variation in the trombone (alternatively baritone or euphonium).

Meditation on St Clement - David Chaulk
Inevitably, comparisons will be made with Philip Wilby's setting of the same hymn tune so It's interesting to note that this arrangement was done in 1983 - ten years prior to Wilby's very fine arrangement. Program NotesThis piece sets out to capture the spirit and fun of a theatrical stage-dance routine. Many will be familiar with the children's song Jesus Bids Us Shine on which it is based.The piece is very light-hearted in character, and would easily lend itself to the addition of some imaginative choreography that could prove extremely entertaining and amusing on the right occasion!In its original brass band form, the piece was written for The Salvation Army's Melbourne Staff Band when they toured the UK in 2001. It was used to great effect by the band on that trip.
