Score & Parts. The Scottish Dance Suite is based on traditional Scottish folk songs and dances, though several less well-known tunes are used. For instance in the second of the four movements, one can hear the older tune of The bonnie Earl of Moray, and in the first movement, the tune is the one to which Burns wrote his famous poem Robin shure in hairst. In the last movement, two well-known tunes alternate, but at the end several of the tunes used in the work all combine together to make an exciting climax. Duration: 8mins.

Jazz Suite No. 2 - Dance I - Dimitri Shostakovich

In 1938 Shostakovich composed his Second Jazz Suite at the request of the recently founded State Orchestra for Jazz conducted by Victor Knushevitsky. This suite was originally scored for a complete symphony orchestra to which four saxophones, an accordion and a guitar had been added. The Jazz Suite no. 1 in three movements, composed in 1934, had been written for a smaller ensemble. The title 'Jazz Suite' is rather misleading, as the composer definitely uses the style of light music. Back in 1928, the twenty-two-year-old Shostakovich had already composed some light music. A bet among friends to make an orchestration of the popular song 'Tea for Two' in less then one hour time, causedhim to compose 'Tahiti Trot'. Shostakovich easily won the bet as he completed the original and witty arrangement within only forty minutes!

Prelude And Dance - Jerry Nowak

Two movements make up this outstanding composition. The first features lyrical flute and clarinet solo passages while the second movement contrasts with a faster tempo, strong themes and powerful ensemble sections. A great addition to the contest literature available at this level!

Dancin' into the '20s (A Ragtime Dance Music Revue)

The music included in has been chosen to reflect some of the styles of music and corresponding use for exhibition and social dancing during the years leading into the 1920s. Each of the works has been orchestrated for wind band from extant published orchestra music of the period. The outside one-two step movements are energetic and perhaps more brusque in nature than and the from Victor Herbert's operetta scores. Each work may be programmed individually, and hopefully, the compilation will serve as a special example of music from a by gone era in American musical and theatrical history.
