Sinfonietta No.1 was originally written for brass band, commissioned by the Dutch National Championships 2011 in Groningen. It also served as the test piece for the Swiss National Championships 2011 in Montreux, Switzerland. In 2012, Johan de Meij created this version for wind orchestra. Unlike most of Johan de Meij's compositions, Sinfonietta No.1 is an abstract, non-programmatic work. It consists of three movements, in which the thematic material of the opening measures, an upward fifth jump. returns in various shapes and forms throughout the piece. The slow middle section features solo passages by cello, English horn and bassoon, all starting with the same fifth jump. The final movement presents an Elgar-like march theme, interspersed with quotes from the second movement, and ending with the opening theme of movement I.Duration: 15.30

The Catskill Mountains is a beautifully preserved region in Upstate New York, flanked to the east by the Hudson River. From the moment Johan de Meij and his wife settled in 2008 in Saugerties, a quaint Hudson Valley town 100 miles north of Manhattan, he started immersing himself into the area's rich musical history. Discovering a fascinating mix of American, Irish and Scottish folk music, ultimately, it was not easy to choose from such abundance. In the end Johan de Meij ended up using the following songs The Foggy Dew, Last Winter was a Hard One, A Poor and Foreign Stranger, The Bluestone Quarries, and The Arkansas Traveller. For countless years the legendary Kitty O'Shea's, a bar at the Hilton and Towers Hotel in Chicago, has been the favourite meeting place for participants of the annual Midwest Band and Orchestra Clinic. It was at this bar that Johan de Meij met Max McKee, from whom he eventually received a commission to write a work based on the folk music of McKee's Irish forefathers. De Meij immersed himself in the project and received unexpected help when, while purchasing an espresso machine from a neighbour, discovered the owner was Bill Whelan, composer of Riverdance. The Geuzen Medal is an annual award given to people or organisations who have found unique ways to further democracy in the world and help eliminate dictatorships, racism, and discrimination. The original Geuzen fought against Spanish imperialism in Holland during the 16th century. During the Second World War a group resisting the Nazis also named themselves De Geuzen. Jan de Haan incorporates Psalm 43, sung by a group of condemned prisoners shortly before their execution in 1943, into Geuzen Medal Fanfare, composed for the 25th bestowal of this special award.Duration: 5:00

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by "De Arumer Swarte Heap," the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!Duration: 9:00

In 1524, Martin Luther published his first hymn book, from which is taken his magnifique chorale Aus tiefer Not schrei ich zu dir (From the depths of the abyss I call upon thee, O Lord)' according to Psalm 130 (De profundis). In 1724, Johann Sebastian Bach composed a cantata, based on Martin Luther's chorale of the same name.
