This fanfare captures the spirit of Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. The Games began in 776 B.C. in honor of Zeus. Since then, they have become the central location for heroes and champions to compete for the highest honors in the world. This work also serves as a reminder that heroes are all around us - in teachers who stay after school to help students, in parents who strive to give their children the best possible lives, and most of all in students themselves, the young champions of our world who see nothing between them and their dreams. The mallet part calls for multiple sets of bells (or other metallic instruments such as the vibraphone). Certainly,two to three players can really make this an effective part. There are two Percussion 1 parts included: a normal part and an advanced part. The level of the snare drummer will determine which part should be used. However, both parts may be used simultaneously if percussionists are available.

Ridgeview Centrum is a fanfare written in composer Alvin Singleton's style of subtle spontaneity, which is experienced through a fusion of classical and folk music elements. In the historic tradition of fanfares, this work was written by Singleton in honor of the students and band teacher he worked with during his BandQuest residency at Ridgeview Middle School in Atlanta, Georgia. (Includes score and parts.) BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. Lion City Festival was commissioned as one of the test pieces for the Singapore Youth Festival 2010, an annual event at which school ensembles from throughout Singapore can receive gold, silver or bronze awards for their performance. The English name for Singapore comes from Malay Singapura, which has Sanskrit roots meaning 'Lion City'. Lion City Festival is in the form of a quick march in ABA form. An opening fanfare leads to a perky march tune which is taken up by the full band. A change of key heralds a legato trio section before the main theme returns in varied form. Roaring fun!
