Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. Hoe Down is taken from the ballad Rodeo, composed in 1942. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

He is already a real superstar in Japan, and with this piece, we get a little peek at why this is so. This short opening music was composed on commission of the symphonic band of Jan Van der Roost's village (= Kontich near Antwerp / Belgium). In 1991, this community band celebrated its 100th anniversary. After composing commissioned pieces from different countries (even from Japan), this was the most 'near' commission he ever received indeed!It is a short but varied piece, featuring all sections of the band. After a short introduction, played by the brass instruments, a crisp rhythm starts and boxes the main theme. After a second theme, played by brass and percussion, a short melodical passage brings some 'rest'. At the end, the fanfare of the introductionreoccurs.Although this "Centennial Prelude" isn't a really demanding piece, it sounds colourful and energetic. It has been recorded on CD by the band of the 'Royal Dutch Airforce' and the 'Desford Colliery Brass band'.

Czardas - Léo Delibes
French composer Lo Delibes (1836-1891) was primarily known for his operettas and short comic operas. He was also famous for the ballet Coppelia from which arranger Wil van der Beek has transcribed the czardas for concert band. Characteristic of this work and the music of Delibes' in general are rhythmic, alternating melodies. Another trademark of Delibes' work is the skilful choice of instrumentation, a facet which this transcription honors thoroughly.The piece is a succession of the various themes the composer uses to work towards a brilliant climax.

Pierius Magnus is a historical figure from the Friesland area of Holland. He was a farmer who became a resistance fighter against Dutch oppressors in around 1500. Whether Magnus was a hero or barbarian is still debatable, but composer Jan de Haan was fascinated by the exciting story and let it fuel his imagination. The protagonist is introduced with a capricious theme which is followed by "De Arumer Swarte Heap," the troops who took to the battlefields against the Dutch. An eerie calm takes over moments before Pier and his troops let their battle cries sound. The work ends as the disillusioned Pier retreats. A concert work overflowing with excitement!

His love for Italy explains Carl Wittrock solid in the composition Tignale, named after the same village that he visited one of his vacations. This village dominates the image of the western shore of Lake Garda, where it has a view on the Monte Baldo at the other side of the lake. It is a busy resort and center for excursions in the area. The enchanting location and stunning natural beauty inspired the composer to a musical description of Tignale and its surroundings. An impressive work and a wonderful challenge for orchestras in the middle section. De liefde voor Itali legt Carl Wittrock vast in de compositie Tignale, genoemd naar het gelijknamige dorpje dathij op een van zijn vakanties bezocht. Dit dorp beheerst het beeld van de westoever van het Gardameer, waar het uitziet op de berg Monte Baldo aan de overzijde. Het is een druk bezocht vakantieoord en middelpunt voor het maken van uitstapjes in de omgeving. De betoverende locatie en het overweldigend natuurschoon inspireerden de componist tot een zeer beeldende muzikale schildering van Tignale en haar omgeving. Een indrukwekkend werk en een prachtige uitdaging voor orkesten in de middenafdeling.

The famous pioneer of original Dutch wind music realised in the early fifties that the wind band had no classical repertoire at all.He thought this shortage should be completed with original compositions instead of transcriptions and arrangements. This little symphony was an immediate success and still belongs to the repertoire of many bands. We thought it was high time to publish a new edition with a full score.

Hugo Alfven was a Swedish violinist (pupil of Csar Thomson in Brussels), conductor and composer who was musical director at the Uppsala University for thirty years. He composed five symphonies, choral works and three Swedish Rhapsodies of which the first 'Midsommarvarka' (Midsummer's watch) from 1904 is the most famous. Alfvn was a great conductor and conducted in 1954 the first Swedish stereo recording session which also included his famous Swedish Rhapsody, the popular version of the main theme of his first Swedish Rhapsody.

Eric Swiggers (Deurne, 1968) is currently conductor of the symphonic band 'Harmonie St Caecilia' of Lieshout and the fanfare band 'De Notenkrakers' (The Nutcrackers) of Vorstenbosch. He has composed quite some interesting pieces for wind band in the lighter vein. This sparkling overture was commissioned by the 'St Caecilia' band that Swiggers is conducting, for its 125th anniversary.
