Program NotesToccata - Oh the blessed Lord was first conceived as a brass sextet and remained in that form until the early 1970s when it was amplified to full brass band instrumentation. Now its further amplification to Wind Band it is hoped that it will be enjoyed by an even greater audience and many more performers.Whilst it is not easy to play, the music, once mastered, is something that bands enjoy. It will be evident to the discerning that this close-knit work is based on the verse of an adaption of the old spiritual, "Oh, dem golden slippers," the text beginning, "Oh the blessed Lord, He has saved my soul." The figures are derived therefrom.The absence of percussion is the express intention of the composer.

Harlequin is the most popular of the comic servant characters from the Italian commedia dell'arte who, although a slow thinker, was acrobatic and nimble - he would never perform a simple action when the addition of a cartwheel or backflip would spice up the movement! These characteristics are aptly portrayed musically in Bruce Broughton's mini concert overture. Originally published for brass band in 1984, this revised version for wind band coveys all the hustle, bustle, and agility of the character in a finely crafted musical structure. This piece is based on the legend of John Henry. Despite being considered folklore, John Henry appears to be based on a true story of a powerful steel driving man who was part of an 1800's railroad tunneling crew. The music depicts the intensity and exertion of a legendary contest between John Henry and a new steam powered machine, which he ultimately won. A three-note motif represents Henry as the music moves through dramatic character and tempo changes, including a moment for the entire band to sing!

Celtic Scents is an amazing suite of wonderful musical scents (wildflowers, herbs, and trees) unified by the brilliant imagination of world-renowned teacher, performer and composer Kazimierz Machala, and the familiar sounds of Celtic folk music. This completely original work of seven movements is reminiscent of Grainger's Lincolnshire Posy, including a very creative and enjoyable harmonic palette. The composition requires a full wind band and takes advantage of colorful orchestration to link each movement more closely to the scent it represents. While Machala composed Celtic Scents originally for orchestra, he has carefully and artistically re-orchestrated the work for the modern wind band.
