Monticello is the name of a little place northeast of Rome where my wife and I have rented a simple home for more than 20 years. We participated intensively in the cultural life of the community where there was also a little band, the Banda Municipale Cornicolana, which consisted of about 55 wind players, mostly youngsters. One day, the "Il Direttore" came to me and asked if I would like to write a march for them, which I naturally did. It became the Marcia a Montecelio. After 14 rehearsals, with everyone tired, perspiring and red in the face, we were forced to give up. The march was too difficult for them. I then wrote another, easier march for them to perform at the forthcoming feast of San Michaeli. The Montecelio march was composed on pure inspiration in just two days. It is written in the Italian style - with a pinch of Sousa.

"Freedom Rising" was written in commemoration of the 150 anniversary of Quantrill's raid on the unsuspecting town of Lawrence, Kansas where the residents bravely fought to defend their town from the forces of pro-slavery western counties. Opening with a dark and haunting woodwind choir, the composition quickly journeys into the raging battle that took place that fateful August day in 1863. The slower middle section is a powerful hymn expressing the hope of all townspeople for a successful defense to this sneak-attack. The dramatic powerful conclusion leaves us with the knowledge that this community fought desperately for the freedom of all people. Up From Earth's Center

"Windrider" is a celebration of life in the notorious wind found on the high plains of North America. This composition is based on the children's song 'Three Blind Mice', of which the melody is featured in a range of variations: in a canon, in inversion, in minor, transformed, with changing harmonisations and orchestrations, and in different times and tempi. The work consists of three continuous, contrasting movements: 1) Mouse March: The mice cheerfully set off while the original melody is presented as a march. - 2) Hymn: In a tuneful hymn, the wonderful praises of the life of mice are sung. - 3) Catch Me If You Can: In an animated chase, the farmer's wife is trying to catch the mice. Following a stirring acceleration, she cuts off their tails in accordance with the lyrics of the song. I hope this work, with its humorous touch, will be a welcome contribution to the expansion of interesting repertoire for the lower divisions. - Bert Appermont
