Hidden Light (Loyalty Among Friends), was composed on the occasion of the 75 year membership of Mr Leo Knoben at the Royal Brass Band 'Eendracht Waubach'(NL). From pride and admiration for this exceptional jubilee , but also out of gratitude for his many years of commitment as musician and member of the board, the association chose to have a memorable work written. That assignment resulted in the wonderful choral Hidden Light, for which composer Kevin Houben based himself on the following emotions and oppositions: small vs majestic, submissive vs royal and simplicity vs glory. The work starts in a very modest, dark atmosphere, after which the composition develops into a grand and lofty sound with broad melodies, exploring the full richness and colors of the 'symphonic' wind band. The interesting variety in orchestration - the small, intimate setting at the beginning and the following broad, majestic tutti passages - makes the work very varied, grateful to perform and to listen to. With Hidden Light Kevin Houben has again created an expressive and powerful composition that is highly reflective in nature. This emotional work is a tribute to an exceptional man who has been there for 'his' orchestra all his life, with a warm heart for 'his' musicians. Each musician will recognise the connection and the passion for music in this piece. Duration: 5.30

Symphony No.3. All men are born free and equal in dignity and rights. They are endowed with reason and conscience and are to meet one another in a spirit of brotherhood. This article 1 of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights forms the basic idea behind this majestic Symphony of Freedom. In each of the three movements, the composer picks another angle on this universal theme of freedom. In the first movement, Cry for Freedom, it's the Dalai Lama of which the composer is a great admirer. The second movement, Dream of Freedom, takes the photograph of the deceased three-year-old refugee boy Ailan Kurdi on the beach at Bodrum as a basis. The finale, Freedom Above All, refers, besides a Bruckner quote, to the music of Ludwig van Beethoven. Centenary 2019 is a three-movement suite based on a local folksong and was commissioned by Chr. Fanfare De Lofstem, from the Dutch province of Friesland, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary in 2019. Awakening Village, the first movement, musically describes the waking up and coming to life of the village. Bintje Monument was inspired by a famous sculpture that was placed to honour headmaster Kornelis Lieuwes de Vries (1854-1929) who developed the well-known potato variety called bintje. The finale, Journey into the Unknown, refers to the band's memorable 2011 concert trip to the United States of America, in which the composer combines elements of the folksong and fragments from The Star-Spangled Banner. The piece consists of a wide range of playful and melodic sequences as well as some galvanising rhythmical passages.Duration: 10.15

Timepiece is a challenging work full of driving rhythms and relentless energy. It started life as the first movement of The Sands of Time, a commissioned work for clarinet choir. Because of the time limits of the commission, Wiffin could not develop the material as much as he had wanted to. He rescored it for wind band and included it as the first movement of a suite, but it did not sit well there because of its difficulty. Now re-worked and extended, the driving rhythms and many changes of time that give the piece its name are now balanced by a quieter, tranquil central section in 3/4. It is not easy, but most of the difficulty lies in the reading of the music rather than in any particular technical problems. It is recorded on on the RAF CD, Music in the Air.Duration: 6.15
