The story of Carmen is set in Seville, Spain, in 1820. It is story of a passionate, fickle, gypsy girl, Carmen, who is one of six major roles in the opera. The story, in four acts, is action-packed, animated, flowing, and never uninteresting. Bizet was well acquainted with Spanish folklore and folk music through his many visits to Spain. For Carmen, he composed a score that is rhythmical, tuneful, and characteristic of the gypsy lifestyle. The adaptation for concert band is a suite in four movements that retains the spirit of the original production.

Fuegos del Alma (Fires of the Soul) - Ferrer Ferran
Present in over 35 countries, provider spectacles largest and most advanced in the world pyrotechnics, and carrying around 1,000 shows a year, Pyrotechnics Caballer SA It is the first fireworks company in Spain and a constant reference worldwide. Its facilities are the largest in Europe and its current president is Caballer Vicente Ramirez, grandson of the founder and third generation. "Fires of Soul" evokes the spirit fireworks, describing the beauty of these fires in all its phases. The Symphonic Overture serve for concert performance or for use accompanying fireworks, and that predominates in a musical composition contrasts of brilliance to get excite the viewer. The ups of "tension" and downs and its spectacular are the basis of this work, not forgetting the lovely sweetness that makes the "lights" fires penetrate our emotional feeling. A Caballer Vicente Ramirez, President of the famed "Pyrotechnics Caballer" for having managed to "dream" with his pyrotechnic art, offering Happiness Humanity. Work composed at the request of the Symphonic Band "Musical Union of Lliria" with affection and pride of all of them and especially the author. This composition was premiered on September 6, 2014, in the auditorium of the Musical Union of Liria (Valencia, Spain) by the "Musical Union of Lliria", leading the author.

Composer Joaquin Turina (1882-1949) was a native of Spain, but was influenced early in his career by the impressionistic harmonies of Debussy and Ravel while studying in Paris. Upon returning to Spain he drew inspiration fromSpanish folk music with La Procession du Rocio becoming one of his best-known works. The music portrays a festival and procession that takes place in the Triana neighborhood of Seville, and is filled with wonderful idiomaticSpanish musical elements. Alfred Reed's marvelous transcription created in 1962 remains an enduring staple in the repertoire for wind bands. Program NotesSinfonietta is a challenging, extended work for symphonic wind band. It is in three movements: Dance with the Devil, A Glimpse of Paradise and Reyes Magos. The first two movements are a transition from dark to light; Dance with the Devil is aggressive and occasionally macabre whereas A Glimpse of Paradise is serene. The first and final parts of the second movement were originally written for a sequence in the Royal Military Tattoo 2000, played under the John Magee poem High Flight – ‘Oh I have slipped the surly bonds of Earth...Put out my hand, and touched the face of God’ - with videos of eagle owls in flight dramatically projected onto the buildings of Horse Guards in Whitehall, London.The last movement, Reyes Magos, is the joyous fiesta of the Three Kings. I wrote Sinfonietta while living in Spain and there January 6th, rather than Christmas Day, is the main day of present-giving, marking the Epiphany, the arrival of the Kings from the Orient at the Nativity.Sinfonietta is technically and expressively demanding but is written within the realms of tonal language.

This piece was written in Spain in late May/early June 2023. The weather was very unseasonal and every day storms rolled over the Sierra Crevillente and unleashed on the Vega Baja. It was therefore very easy to imagine the sense of an impending storm. The piece was intended to be in the range of Grade 2 and the limited instrumentation, ranges and technical resources presented unique challenges.Duration: 3.45
