The Little Drummer Boy - Katherine K. Davis, Henry Onorati, and Harry Simeone / arr. Gerald Sebesky

This song of the holiday season has become so much a part of that tradition that many people believe it to be a melody handed down through the ages. We hear it wherever we travel, and it typifies the atmosphere that surrounds us all during that festive time. For the youngest ensemble, this new and very simple scoring is perfect programming material. (2:06)

    Haywire - Erik Morales

This clever yet serious work is designed with intentional tonal misdirection. Elements of tonality work in tandem with dissonance so that simple melodies do not resolve in a manner that is expected. Highly original music that constantly takes the listener on a series of unexpected turns that culminate in a powerful, satisfying ending.

    Warlock - Kevin Kaisershot

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. A warlock is a male who practices witchcraft. This little tonal caricature by Kevin Kaisershot seeks to musically portray this enigmatic character in a somewhat less than frightening way. The tritone and its usage in the Middle Ages was forbidden, but today has become more associated with its rather "devious" sound and pops up every so often in music of that nature. The opening is that of the shroud of mystery surrounding the character. The main body of the piece is the swirling cone of energy that the character possesses, and the waltz section is a dance related section containing a bit of devious comic relief.

    Red Prelude - Kevin Clary

was composed to be performed on a beginner band's first concert. The composer's overarching goal was 1) to create a piece that is accessible for students that have been playing for less than a year, but that still sounds sophisticated and mature and 2) to introduce students to minor mode in a context that is slightly more restrained and reflective than many pieces written for their age group. The Light Shines in the Darkness - Barry Milner

A lighthouse stands upon a shoreline to be a beacon for all ships coming into a harbor. This beacon guides ships to safety that otherwise might have been destroyed by the rocks of the shoreline. This beacon also serves as a hope to those ships that are lost at sea. The light also refers to wisdom, compassion, and love. John 1:5 of the bible states that, "The light shines in the darkness, but the darkness has not understood it" (NIV). The light in this passage refers to Jesus who was trying to reach out to a world that did not understand and was looking for hope. "The piece is a good choice to teach lyrical playing and intonation in sustained chords." -

God So Loved the World - Score and Parts - Sir John Stainer

The Crucifixion, an oratorio composed by John Stainer in 1887 was designed in such a way that most church choirs would find it accessible. Also, it helpfully includes five hymns so that the congregation can contribute also. Whilst the text for this work was written by W J Sparrow Simpson, who worked with Stainer in an earlier work entitled 'Mary Magdalene', that used in this setting of 'God, so loved the world' is literal from John 3 verse 16 in the scriptures. This movement of 'The Crucifixion' is the most popular and widely used.

The Proclamation of Christmas - Score and Parts - Stephen Bulla

Program NotesOriginally written as the 'show opener' for one of The Salvation Army's spectacular annual Christmas Carol concerts in London, and premiered by The International Staff Band, Stephen Bulla's overture The Proclamation of Christmas is an extended work that features a number of popular Christmas tunes, including Hark The Herald Angels Sing, Ding Dong Merrily on High, and The First Nowell. There are also two slightly less well-known tunes that are linked to the carols - While Shepherds Watched and Angels from the Realms of Glory - and the piece concludes with a final flourish from O Come, All Ye Faithful. Its dramatic opening and imaginative structure make it a rewarding piece to rehearse and perform, and it certainly fulfills all the requirements of a Christmas show opener! So, we firmly believe that this overture will be a popular addition to Christmas repertoire for concert band in the same way as it was in its original version for brass band.
