San Pedro de Alcntara - Valdemar Gomes

The Spanish war galleon with 64 cannons, built in Cuba between 1770 and 1771 for an English shipowner in the service of the King of Spain left Peru for Cadiz in 1784 with a huge cargo of copper, gold, silver and other valuables on board. There were also more than 400 people on board, including passengers, crew and Inca prisoners after a revolt. The Atlantic crossing went smoothly, passing Portugal to take advantage of favourable winds. The shipwreck off Peniche was the result of human error, apparently due to French maps with dramatic errors in the position of the islands of Berlengas and neighbouring islets. On 2 February 1786, the sea was calm and the night clear, but they hit the rock formation Papoa and the hull immediately broke in two. The bottom sank quickly, while the deck remained afloat for some time. 128 people lost their lives, including many Indians who were trapped in the basement. This shipwreck is considered one of the most important in maritime history. What the composer wants to convey, and what can be felt as one listens, is first of all the sound of power, of hope, of the glory of conquest, of the splendour of wealth. This is followed by the perception of the maritime environment, the harmony with the softness of the ocean, the gliding of the hull in the foam of the sea on sunny, blue days. But along with this tranquillity, you soon hear a rhythmic chain that makes you feel a representation of the hustle and bustle, of the busy crew, of the hard work of a sailor, of the desperation of an exotic people imprisoned in a dark, damp cellar. A distinct rhythm that reminds us of the "salero" of Andalusia, with its Arab influences and its people, the soothing of the resignation of others who are forced to submit. Then we clearly hear a crescendo that makes us imagine the agony of the collision that precedes the shipwreck. The breaking of the hull, the water flooding everything, the despair, the clash of bodies on the rocks, the tragedy to come. Before the "grand finale", in which the return of musical softness reminds us that the story is over. The supremacy of nature over human greed. The waves, though gentle, sweep the wreckage, the lives and the treasures of the New World to the bottom of the sea.

Pulsar - The Metamorphosis of a Star - John Brakstad

4th July in 1054 AD one of the most spectacular events was witnessed in the Cosmos. A massive star blew out; a supernova explosion. From the Earth it appeared as a new, bright star; the most brilliant in the sky. It was visible for three weeks, also in daylight, before it then faded away. But what was left of it is spectacular. Today we call it the "Crab Nebula".And in the very centre of the Nebula lies the remnant of the star; the core crushed by the force of gravity. This is a rotating neutron star, a pulsar, just 20 kilometres across, but so dense that it weighs more than our sun.As the neutron star spins, ejected particles stream out from its poles at almost the speed of light. These jets create powerful beams that sweep around as the star rotates. When the beams sweep across the Earth, they can be heard as regular pulses. We call them pulsars. In this piece there are three percussion parts. In addition there is an "optional part" to replace the marimba and vibraphone written in the three original percussion parts if desired. This fourth part is shown in the full score.

Isolation - Suite in 5 Movements - Øystein Sjøvaag Heimdal

This suite in 5 movements was written during the Corona pandemic and is inspired by experiences and feelings during this period. Feelings like insecurity, frustration, happiness, sorrow, hope, and optimism are the underlying themes, and this can be heard through the music. This is not, however, program music, so the audience may have their own perception of what the music is about. This piece provides the opportunity to focus on the different elements of music, such as dynamics, articulation, expression, tone control and timbre. The five movements can be performed separately.

    Malkauns - Lindsay Boyd

While teaching in India, composer Lindsay Boyd became acquainted with the fundamentals of Northern Hindustani music. The result is this intriguingly unique work for wind band that incorporates distinctive sounds of India. The "drone" sound of the tambura is available as a free download online, or may be substituted with a marimba. The vocal chanting in the piece is a representation of the syllables used by a tabla player when learning to play this exotic drum. This is a wonderful piece for expanding the musical horizons of your players and audience!

The Wind Rises - Joe Hisaishi

This beautiful, lyrical melody is so colorful in the film, without having an imposing image. "The Wind Rises" (2013) does not dominate the visual, and perhaps is an ideal form of film music considering this is director Miyazaki's final production. Chamber ensembles with solos and strings are frequently used in the soundtrack, so the sound is mellow and soft. As you listen more and more, you still recognize the tradition of Ghibli music. When I arrange, I try not to visualize the image of a film. I may think of characters and story line but is it important to write music that alone is appealing and fascinating. Trying not to "overstate" the film is not needed here. If you can bring out the most appealing parts of the soundtrack, excess can be forgiven. Of course, I have not changed the musical elements of the original.I asked Mr. Tomoki Ubata (band director at Ina Gakuen Sr. High School) whom I have worked with numerous times to assist with layout. He came up with a heartwarming medley with two main parts; leading boy Jiro's gift for aeronautical design and his romance with the heroine, Natsuko. The following themes are contained in the arrangement:1. Nahoko (A Rainbow) Beginning2. Caproni (An Aeronautical Designer's Dream) C3. A Journey (An Encounter at Karuizawa) H4. The Falcon I5. Prototype 8 N6. A Journey (A Parting) & A Journey (A Dream of Flight) PIt is quite remarkable, looking back on 30 years of Studio Ghibli's achievements.(Kazuhiro Morita)

Greek Folk Song Suite - Franco Cesarini

Greek folk music is characterised by the sound of the 'buzuki' which is often used in combination with the clarinet, the mandolin, the violin and various types of tambourines. In Greek Folk Song Suite, Franco Cesarini has elaborated on three songs belonging to this most ancient tradition. The first, O Haralambis, is in 7/8 time, a characteristic of a popular folk dance called kalamatianos. Originally, the song O Haralambis was sung to 'tease' during weddings with the text of the song refering to a young man who refuses to marry. The second movement, Stu Psiloriti, refers to an ancient song from the island of Crete. The third movement of the suite is based on the songVasilikos tha gino and is characterised by the sirtaki, probably the most popular Greek dance outside of Greece. This is Greek passion portrayed by a concert band!

Goddess of Fire - Steven Reineke

A magnificent programmatic work for symphonic band that is an offering to Pele, the Goddess of Hawaii's volcanoes. The work opens with primordial, mysterious sounds representing the foreboding volcanoes of Hawaii. We are then introduced to Pele as a tall, beautiful young woman. This is one of the forms she can take and it represents her powers of creation and beauty. This gives way to the active and destructive Pele, often taking the form of an old woman, wrinkled and bent with age. The following lyrical section of the piece is the full statement of Pele's theme of creation and beauty. As this theme settles, we begin to hear the ground pop and crack letting us know that new lava is beginning to bubble and flow. Suddenly and violently, one of her volcanoes erupts, creating massive chaos and destruction. After the eruption subsides, Pele's theme of creation and beauty returns again. A wonderful addition to any concert or festival performance by mature bands. Exceptional in every respect!

    Inferno - Sven Van Calster

On 25th May 2011 a huge fire broke out in the Kalmthoutse Heath nature reserve north of Antwerp. Within a very short time more than 600 hectares of heath land went up in flames. The effect on the surrounding environment was huge. The fire left deepscars affecting the residents, those responsible for heath land, and also the members of the fire brigade who for several days risked their lives to fight the fire. The composition Inferno begins majestically and on a huge scale, exactly as theKalmthoutse Heath is. Soon a theme is introduced into the work in which the magnificent beauty of nature can be heard. We then hear the fires on the heath set to music. Even thefire helicopter can be heard, together with the first discussions thattook place after the alarm was raised with the Kalmthoutse fire brigade. One fact remains at the centre of this work, however: the natural beauty and splendour of the heath landscape. This is expressed at the start of the work in a theme that recursthroughout the piece. Towards the end it is finally replaced by a peaceful conclusion, representing the hope for a speedy regeneration of this wonderful nature reserve. Download the audio file from the 'Attachments'.

    Spirited Away - Joe Hisaishi

This is an arrangement of Ghibli's Anime film, "Spirited Away". It consists of six themes including No-Face, One Summer Day, The Bottomless Pit, Yubaba's Panic, Always with Me, and Reprise. I also added an alternate introduction using The Dragon Boy. The No-Face opener is somewhat avant-garde with technical difficulties so select the opening that is best suited to your ensemble. The arrangement concept was created by Mr. Tomoki Ubata of Ina Gakuen Sr. High School. His wonderfully crafted ideas always impress me. Especially, in the arrangement, mallet percussion and piano are effectively used to sound like a music box and the lyrical melody of Reprise is superimposed. This scene is the best part of the entire arrangement and is very emotional. All these fine melodies from the film transport both audience and performers to the fantastic world of anime. Tirol Terra Fortis - Jan Van der Roost

The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the 'Tiroler Landeshymne' (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified. This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its 'couleur locale': for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!
