Ecossaise for Military Band, WoO 22 - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. Todd Stalter

An ecossaise, derived from the French word for "Scottish," was a dance that was very popular in Europe in the early nineteenth century. Beethoven was enamored with the music of the British Isles, and composed this work in 1810; though he withheld it from publication, it was published posthumously. Beethoven's humor and playfulness abound in this delightful arrangement for young players. (1:35)

Egmont Overture - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. John Cacavas

This is great music that works extremely well for band when scored by a master arranger like John Cacavas. Beethoven composed the incidental music to Goethe's tragedy Egmont in 1810 (opus 84). The story concerns a historic figure, the Count of Egmont in the Netherlands, who is condemned to death by the occupying Spaniards. Like his only opera, Fidelio, it was a tale that attracted the composer because of the concept of individual freedom.

    Eine Kleine Christmas

The lights dim, the audience is hushed, the baton is aloft, and 'away we go!' 'Tis a musical romp with tongue in cheek, and we hope that Mr. Mozart's attorney is not in the house. Smiles will turn to giggles, and even an embouchure or two may fall prey to the humor. Relax . . . it's the season to be jolly! (duration 2:34)

    El Cid - Scott Watson

"El Cid" musically portrays the thrilling adventures and conquests of Rodrigo Daz de Vivar, a nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain. This rewarding work uses an infectious Spanish rhythmic ostinato (3+3, 2+2+2 in 3/4 time) that undergirds the main theme, driving the piece as it builds. Ample percussion, including an important tambourine part, contributes to the Spanish feel. (2:55) This title is available in MakeMusic Cloud.
