Ecossaise for Military Band, WoO 22 - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. Todd Stalter

An ecossaise, derived from the French word for "Scottish," was a dance that was very popular in Europe in the early nineteenth century. Beethoven was enamored with the music of the British Isles, and composed this work in 1810; though he withheld it from publication, it was published posthumously. Egmont Overture - Ludwig van Beethoven / arr. John Cacavas

This is great music that works extremely well for band when scored by a master arranger like John Cacavas. Beethoven composed the incidental music to Goethe's tragedy Egmont in 1810 (opus 84). The story concerns a historic figure, the Count of Egmont in the Netherlands, who is condemned to death by the occupying Spaniards. Like his only opera, Fidelio, it was a tale that attracted the composer because of the concept of individual freedom.

"El Abanico" (The Fan) is the most famous work of Spanish bandmaster Alfredo Javaloyes. This pasodoble (a quick, Spanish military march) was named after a popular caf in Cartagena containing a large, fan-shaped table where artists (including the composer) reportedly gathered daily for discussions and refreshments.

El Cid - Scott Watson

"El Cid" musically portrays the thrilling adventures and conquests of Rodrigo Daz de Vivar, a nobleman and military leader in medieval Spain. This rewarding work uses an infectious Spanish rhythmic ostinato (3+3, 2+2+2 in 3/4 time) that undergirds the main theme, driving the piece as it builds.
