Imani

Imani, which means faith, is the seventh day of Kwanzaa, the African and African-American celebration of family and culture. This challenging and colorful piece rises from its quiet chant-like opening (involving part of the band singing the "Imani" tune) to a sonorous major climax at measure 51. The faster section that follows makes brilliant use of an enlarged percussion section that includes a number of assorted instruments (Log drums, Congas, Claves, et. al.) This is a terrific multicultural selection that will have many uses for holiday programs and contest performances. Duration: 6'

Improvement (March) - Harold Bennett

Here is a classic march from Harold Bennett (psudonym of Henry Fillmore), which is part of the famous Bennett Band Book series. This piece will serve as an excellent introductory march to teach this imprtant and historically significant style to youn band musicians. Improvement contains distinctive Henry Fillmore melodies that are truly memorable.

In a New Light

Beginning with a build to a nice climax that sets up some of the main thematic material, "In a New Light" drives forward with a lot of interplay between woodwinds, brass, and percussion. A section of repose follows with interjections of the rhythmic themes ending in an energetic build to the piece's conclusion.

In Grandfather's Arms - James Meredith

The warmth of a grandfather's embrace as he stares in awe of a cherished baby grandchild is the inspiration for this heartfelt composition. In Grandfather's Arms is a work for developing bands that emphasizes expression, phrasing, and dynamics. Low voices will also have the opportunity to be featured as they carry the key melody making this piece a wonderful teaching tool.

In That Quiet Moment

In That Quiet Momentwas written in memory of the composer's father. Grant Michel's heart-wrenching piece of reflection and sadness from the loss of a parent is rendered more poignant since the untimely passing of the composer himself. It is a wonderful piece to teach students emotional involvement in music and musicianship.
