    Concertino for Clarinet (Clarinet Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Cesarini, Franco

    Concertino for Clarinet and Wind Orchestra was commissioned by the Swiss Wind Band Association (SBV) to celebrate the "Year of the Clarinet 2015". In three sections, separated by cadenzas for the soloist, the work explores all aspects and characteristics of the clarinet. It includes virtuoso elements and dialogues between the other winds, as well as a beautiful slow movement, which makes this piece a musically challenging yet accessible piece for any audience.     Elgar Variations (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Ellerby, Martin

    The year 2007 marked the 150th anniversary of the birth of the British composer Sir Edward Elgar (1857-1934) and as such I thought it an appropriate moment to write something in tribute to this event. There are quite a few enigmas about this piece and they are all intentional! First and foremost is that the variations are not constructed on any of Elgar's actual themes. Rather I have written a sequence of contrasting sections (all played without a break) on the essence and character of his musical style. I have also written this work with bands, the soloists within, conductors and, not least, their audience firmly in mind. The language is essentially tonal and the test musical rather than overtly technical. There are no tempo indications other than suggested metronome marks. I have deliberately kept things to a minimum as the true test here is to find the style and interpret that aspect over the whole structure. Whereas the faster sections are more or less self explanatory the slower parts require deliberate rubato and much feeling. This is for the conductors to discover and I encourage them to do so. Adjudicators should be fully aware that I sanction this aspect but it requires an insight and understanding to successfully execute so 'any old thing' will not suffice! The 'variation' commencing at rehearsal letter P is the emotional core of the piece and requires a passionate but not saccharine approach to pacing and sensuality. The cadenza type material is built into the process rather than being a separate sequence of entities. There are many allusions to the music of Elgar here without recourse to blatant pastiche - if it is thought of as a series of songs and dances this may help.     The Kings Go Forth (Concert Band - Score only) - Gregson, Edward

    This work was commissioned jointly by the Royal Air Force Music Service and an American Universities Consortium and received its world premiere during the 1996 RAF British Tour. It is scored for large symphonic wind band, with the addition of voices.The work is a sequel to the highly successful The Sword and the Crown which was premiered in 1991 by the mass bands of the RAF (and also was an RAF commission). That work was based on music written for the Royal Shakespeare Company productions of The Plantagenets and Henry IV, parts 1 and 2 (for productions between 1988 and 1991).The Kings go Forth is similarly based on musical material for those productions. It uses different thematic elements and incorporates them into a three-movement suite entitled: The Church; The People; The State.This reflects the fact that in Henry IV Parts 1 and 2, Shakespeare introduces The People as an important element in the dramatic structure. The Church and The State are, of course, both leitmotivs throughout the entire plays. An Agnus Dei is heard at the outset from a solo voice. The ensuing Dies Irae is a fast and, at times, quite violent dance. The two sections which form the basis of the second movement, The People, concentrate on popular elements and reflect to some extent the tavern scenes in the plays. The two ideas presented are a harvest hymn reflecting the country scenes set in Gloucestershire, and a jazzy, 'up-tempo' dance based on the medieval song, Sumer is icumen in. The third movement, The State, deals with the Kings theme in the title of the piece. The juxtaposition of battle music with funeral music for Henry IV and Henry VI leads to a reworking of the leitmotif from the beginning of the work.     Ballabili (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Verdi, Giuseppe - Van der Beek, Wil

    Giuseppe Verdi's opera Macbeth was written in 1846/47 and premiered in Florence. It is based on Shakespeare's Macbeth and, unlike Verdi's other operas, had relatively little broad impact. This may be due to the difficulty of the singing voices, the lack of a love story or the dark mood, without humorous scenes.Musically, however, this opera is not uninteresting. Among other things, all the dramatic highlights culminate in artistically built ensembles. It also contains interesting instrumental effects, such as a wind orchestra under the stage in the witch scenes. This makes the witches and air spirits seem like from another world. In the 19th century opera, such a wind band, a so-called "banda" was not uncommon but an integral part of the scene.The Ballabili comes from Act III of Verdi's opera MacBeth. Ballabili is the plural of the Italian ballabile, meaning "danceable." It can also mean a dance performed by the corps de ballet, or by the chorus in an opera; or the music to accompany this dance.Duration: 2:15

    Canterbury Chorale (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Van der Roost, Jan

    This quiet piece with its broad tones was originally written for brass band on request of Robert Leveugle, chairman of the composers own band: Brass Band Midden Brabant (Belgium). The direct cause was a visit to the beautiful cathedral of the English city Canterbury, in which so many fine compositions sounded throughout the centuries. Later on, Jan Van der Roost rescored this piece for symphonic wind band, exploring the full richness of colours of this formation. Besides solo phrases for several instruments, there are some massive tutti passages making the wind orchestra sound like a majestic organ. By the way: an "ad libitum" organ part adds an extra richness, colour and power to this piece, making it sound even more broad and grand.Duration: 6:30

The basis for the piece is the clarinet's construction from the wood of the African blackwood tree, and its subsequent development into the instrument we know today.
