Kare Grottum is known to most as a pianist and producer by NRK. He was involved in numerous TV productions, both as producer, musician, composer, and arranger. This tune is taken from a CD released in 1992, Fra en musikers dagbok where he brings with him several Norwegian soloists of international class. It is Erling Wicklund who does a brilliant solo on Flugabone which has also used as a starting point for the written improvisation. The arrangement should be played in a slightly swinging way, but not as much as a jazz waltz. Play with the straight eighths and then let it flow, with a faint two against three feeling, which clearly shows up in some places. Gustav Holst began composition of A Fugal Overture in 1922, completing the full score in January 1923. Despite its name, the overture is not strictly fugal. It belongs to the era of neo-classicism, but apparently by coincidence, for Holst had not yet heard some of the Stravinsky and Hindemith works which set this fashion. The fugal subject is full of spiky crossrhythms - Holst grouped the eighth notes (quavers) of his 4/4 into a pattern of 3 + 3 + 2, thus giving a bar of three unequal beats. The piece is intense and exciting, and should make an important addition to the repertoire of the Concert Band.

£84.95A Fugal Concerto (Flute, Oboe And Small Wind Band) (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Holst, Gustav - Brand, Geoffrey
This work was originally written for flute, oboe (or two violins) and String Orchestra in 1923. This arrangement was premiered by the Stockholm Symphonic Winds in September 1993, conducted by the arranger. The style of A Fugal Concerto is very much neo-classical - all the rage at the time, although whether Holst had heard Stravinsky's examples is not known. In so far as the work is fugal, the adjective applies more to the texture than the form, although the second movement is canonic. The contrapuntal texture is not straightforward as phrases are displaced across barlines and cross rhythms are a feature. Nothing is allowed to settle until the folk tune is introduced toward the end. Yet, within this musical web, fascinating patterns and cross references reveal themselves.
