This arrangement of Randall Thompson's unaccompanied choral piece, The Best of Rooms, was transcribed by Barbara Lambrecht. As a student, Barbara fell in love with Thompson's music after hearing the Texas All State Choir sing his Testament of Freedom. Years later, as a school band director, she joined her church choir and "discovered" The Best of Rooms. Charmed not only by the music but also the text, she arranged this gem for wind band so that a new generation of musicians, in this case instrumentalists, could experience the genius of Randall Thompson. Two wind band versions are available: Version A opens with clarinet choir and oboe solo, while Version B opens with horn quartet. A little work almost begging to be kissed ! So deceptively simple but because of that also containing a good many of the well-known snakes in the grass. The work was premiered as a warm-up for a contest, but it may be played in many ways in various occasions. Whiffs of baroque and pinches of romanticism melt in this little contemporary work. Here's a marvelous arrangement featuring the engaging sounds of folk music from Sweden. It opens with a brief fanfare followed by In The Summer The Sun Shines So Clearly. After the lovely 3/4 melody Flowers Of Joy, Eric alternateswoodwind and brass choirs on the dignified O Varmland. The lively song My Love Like A Dainty Shepherdess is written in 3/4 for ease of reading, and the medley concludes with a majestic setting of The King. Well scored with plentyof variety.

£90.30Dichter Und Bauer - Franz von Suppé
The composer of Belgian-Italian descendance Francesco Ezechiele Ermenegildo Cavaliere Supp-Demelli (1819-1895) was active as a conductor especially in Vienna. He wrote some thirty operettas among which 'The beautiful Galathea', 'Pique Dame', 'Light Cavalry' and 'Bocaccio'. His most famous overture 'Poet and Peasant' was part of some theatre music written for the comedy 'Dichter und Bauer' by Karl Elmar. Some adequate opening music was needed for the premiere performance in Vienna in August 1846. The poet asked the young conductor Franz von Supp who accepted in spite of the very short term available. Actually, he rearranged some music that had already been performed without success. The music publisher Josef Aibl was present at the premiere perfomance and was so overwhelmed by this music that he immediately bought the publishing rights for the ridiculous sum of eight guilders. Being short of money, Supp accepted but he bitterly regretted for the rest of his life as the publisher printed numerous editions and sold no less than 52 different arrangements. The story deals with the lack of understanding of a guardian for his pupil who does not abandon her lover. Though he is a peasant, that young man is also an excellent poet who even beats a poet from the city at a literary duel. This, of course, makes his prestige even bigger with the girl. Finally all ends well thanks to an old peasant. It has often been pretended that the international success of this overture is largely due to the many wind band arrangements.
