£116.40Rapsodie sur des Themes Normands - Serge Lancen
The Paris born composer and pianist Serge Lancen (1922-2005) studied the piano with Marguerite Long and composition with Tony Aubin at the conservatory of his native town and was awarded a Prix de Rome. Lancen composed symphonic music, choral works, ballet music and several concertos.In 1960 he met his ancient study friend Dsir Dondeyne, conductor of the Paris Metropolitan Police Band, who incited him to write for symphonic band. Lancen wrote an impressive series of wind band works that earned him an international reputation. Among his most successful compositions are Manhattan Symphony (1962) an Cape Kennedy (1970), but we should not forget that Lancen also wrote several fine works for symphonic bands of average level. So he did in 1976 by writing two rhapsodies based respectively on Breton and Normandy themes. The Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy was recorded in 1977 on a long playing record by the French National Police Band conducted by Pierre Bigot alongside with Le Mont-Saint-Michel, Hymne la Musique and Rapsodie sur des Thmes Breton. Rhapsody on Themes from Normandy is a piece that is characterized by an original orchestration and fluent melodic lines, two main characters of Lancen's music.

The original 16th century Ricercare was actually a vocal work without words.Instrumental music is in search of its independence: the content was so to say a musical invocation.The Ricercare in this case is an invocation of the various themes - seemingly contradictory - yet forming a symphonic unity, which is attained by their contrast and their dialogue in counterpoint.One of these themes is formed by the tones B - A - C - H (B = German for B-flat; H = German for B-natural).This Ricercare has nothing to do with the old Motet character.

The number 2000 - to begin with - stands for the magic year, that is drawing near so swiftly. Another fact represented by this number is that this overture makes the two thousandth work published by MOLENAARS MUZIEKCENTRALE since its foundation in 1933. 'Ouverture 2000' was written to commemorate this occasion and it is dedicated to the Molenaar family.The music displays a pithy, festive and dynamic character.The opening fanfare is succeeded by a fast and virtuoso movement in which a 'pull-out of all stops' of the various windband registers can be heard.

The title of this overture betrays its high-spirited character; it keeps the listener in suspence up to the last strains. The quick and virtuoso introduction Allegro Vivace is followed by a quite melodious Con Moto e Cantabile (written for two parts and in sixths). A Molto Maestoso interludium is followed by two parts Allegro con Fuoco and Moderat, and then the works reaches its only pause with a slowly movement lasting for sixteen bars. The initial tempo Allegro Vivace returns so that the overture can end with the same high-spirited character.

£121.70The Highlights from Elisabeth - Michael Kunze
The life of the Austrian empress Elisabeth (1837-1898) which started as a fairy tale but ended as a tragedy, inspired the librettist Michael Kunze and the composer Silvester Levay to write a musical based on the life of the popular 'Sissi'. The musical was premiered in Vienna on 3 September 1992 and was very successful for many years. The story is told by Luigi Lucheni, Elisabeth's murderer. So death, represented by a mysterious and seductive young man, is omnipresent throughout the musical. Several songs have become hits and, of course, you can hear them in this fine selection by Peter Kleine Schaars who gathered various music and dance styles such as the rock shuffle, the jazz waltz and the classical Viennese waltz.

£52.70Balkan Gipsies - Paul Voet
Gipsies are wizards with the fiddle. Eastern European folk musicians and gipsies are using a lot of brass in their music. Their brass ensembles are very impressive, so the link to brassbands is quickly made. Based on the folk theme of Manea Tsigailor all cornets join the theme in an up tempo 7/8 bar. Gathered around a campfire gipsies are telling stories and making music. When the lower brass is telling their story all others clap hands. All of a sudden a cornet soloist appears. When we return to the basic theme the story ends with some dazzling bars.

£50.80Dance of the One-legged Sailor - Dick van Heuvel
The work describes a short dance by a one-legged sailor. In the 6/8 beat the sailor always makes the wrong steps and gets furious about it. So he stamps his wooden leg (sounded by beats on two large woodblocks) in anger on the floor. Yet he tries again and each time the theme changes a little bit. The two passages when the musicians blow air through their instruments (measures 44-45 and 63-64) represent the sailor's sighing. The 'Dance of the one-legged sailor' also offers several possibilities to bring this sailor on the stage during the performance of the composition.

£135.50Dis-TENSIONS-diS - Carlos Pellicer
The title 'Dis-TENSIONS-diS' is a game (or pun) with the words tension and distension (relaxation). The work stems from a 'Leitmotiv' presented at the beginning of the work by the warm sound of the bassoon. So from this melody draws all small parts for maximum re-use like elements of cohesion in different parts of the work. Hence the inevitable game of 'tension and relaxation' that occurs from such re-use of the same subject, but with a multitude of possible variations. Dis-TENSIONS-diS received a Mencion de Honor at the Italian Concorso Internazionale di Composizione originale per banda 2009.

Back to Normandy is a composition for concert band on the occasion of D-Day. On D-Day (June 6, 1944) the liberation of Western Europe started at the beach of Normandy. A long campaign through Europe followed before the liberation was complete. Back to Normandy describes the first hours of the landing with the shelling of the German positions as a (musical) peak. As an introduction you will see and hear de preperations for the biggest campaign ever. Very special and unique is the fact that the music of Back to Normandy can be performed synchronously with a movie with original footage, specially made for this composition. This will without a doubt be an extra experience for the audience. So far performances like this were exclusively for professional orchestras (like George Fenton, Earth). This piece is specially suitable for concert bands that want to offer their audience something special and also want to honour the liberators. The movie to practise for the concert is on Youtube (meassures and metronome are visible/audiblematen). Alone in the nest, a young fledgling bathes in the morning Spring sun. As he approaches the edge of the nest, a gentle breeze warms his feathers. He spreads his wings wide open and the wind starts to pick up, almost like an invitation. He stops and looks into the distant blue sky. Up there his siblings seem to be having so much fun and after months of imagining what it would be like to fly, he finally jumps! He's a fledgling no more. Now he's a falcon.
