£75.00Cotswold Dances 3. Pittville Promenade (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Lane, Philip - Noble, Paul
The program notes are included for each of the five movements: 1.The first movement refers to the source of the River Thames, with its rippling accompaniment figures. 2.Badminton House is a picture of the world-famous Horse Trials, with an archaic touch here and there to point to the House itself. 3. Pittville Park is the largest open space in Cheltenham, England, with Gustav Holst's birthplace at one end and the famous Pump Room at the other. The composer remembers childhood walks there and varying degrees of catching newts and the like in the central lake. 4. Cleeve Hill is the highest point in the Cotswold chain, just reaching a thousand feet above sea level at one point, making it, officially, a mountain, albeit a gentle one. Nevertheless, the extremes of weather through the seasons are reflected here, with an ominous note or two suggesting Belas Knap, an ancient burial ground sited nearby. 5. The final movement takes the traditional Gloucestershire wassail song, heard at Christmas, and manipulates it through any number of filters and distortions. (Note: Some harp parts are doubled, some are more essential. If no harp, the part can be played either by electronic keyboard or piano.)

An ancient Japanese legend promises that folding 1,000 origami cranes will make your wish come true. If those cranes are folded in honour of someone, it shows that person is held in high esteem.The composition is an elegy that begins with a four-note theme. This motive is used in various ways throughout the piece as a unifying factor. Although its initial appearance is somewhat haunting, the motive becomes quite comforting by the end of the piece. References to cranes in flight are frequent and the use of pentatonic scales and tam-tam provides a nod to the music of Japan.Duration: 6.45

£242.00Dutch Masters Suite (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Meij, Johan
For this exciting work Johan de Meij took his inspiration from Rembrandt's The Night Watch, Vermeer's Love Letter and Steen's Prinsjesdag. In the first movement the solo trombone keeps watch at night, whilst in the second movement lyrical lute music accompanies Vermeer's Love Letter. The third movement takes place in a tavern, where the drinking, singing and (increasingly inarticulate) music take place. An epilogue from the watchful trombone brings the piece to a peaceful end. This work by Johan de Meij was the set-piece for 2nd division concert bands at the 16th WMC in Kerkrade 2009. Duration: 21.00

In 2007 Philip Sparke was appointed composer-in-residence to Monmouth School, situated on the Welsh/English border. The school, which has a venerable history dating back to 1614, has a thriving music department which boasts two concert bands, in co-operation with the nearby Haberdashers' Monmouth School for Girls, and a brass band.This exciting and innovative appointment involved three visits by the composer during the year as well as the commissioning of a new piece for each of the bands, all of which were premiered in a concert at the end of the year.Almshouse Street Blues was written for the brass band, whose members were allowed to vote for which type of piece they would get! Monmouth School is based in Almshouse Street and the town has a thriving summer festival which, alongside blues bands, features a wide variety of music including jazz, soul, rock and bangra.Duration: 4.45

In the course of the two centuries following the death of Henry Purcell in 1695, no British composer of any statue was apparent. Consequently, the break-through of Edward Elgar (1857-1934) as an internationally known and respected composer at the end of the last century, was of considerable importance. As a composer Elgar was largely self-taught and he looked towards the continent for his inspiration. He is without doubt on par with his contemporaries such as the somewhat younger Richard Strauss. The Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost is a genuine admirer of Elgar's music and on the occasion of the fiftieth anniversary of the composer's death in 1984 he composed the "Ceremonial March". Van der Roost was inspired by the most famous and frequently played works from Elgar's catalogue of works, the characteristic "Pomp and Circumstances" marches, and decided to add his own, sixth march to the existing collection.Duration: 5:30

£214.95BLACK FIRE (after Paradise Lost) (Violin Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Clarke, Nigel
This is not a straight forward concerto, but rather a symphonic drama for violin and ensemble. It uses the soloist as both protagonist and ensemble player, much as Berlioz treated the viola in his symphony 'Harold in Italy'. Black Fire is written in one movement though it has three clear sections (slow, fast and slow). The music reflects the various shades of darkness and suffering that dominate the atmosphere of the early part of the poem. The violinist takes the role of Satan, reflecting his moods, from righteous indignation to sorrowful remorse. A motif from Wagner's opera 'Gotterdaemmerung' (Twighlight of the Gods) is used throughout the work to represent Satan's brooding hatred. At the end of the work you will find Satan in the form of the solo violin heroically travelling towards Paradise to corrupt 'Mankind'. Duration: 26:00

Aboriginal SpiritOver many centuries, the Aboriginal people have cultivated a unique ability to live in harmony with the world around them. Maintaining the deli?cate balance between their trinity - nature, man, and creation - is an important factor for bliss and happiness.Primeval Sound and Dreamtime The tens of thousands-year-old stories from the era called Dreamtime - the Aborigines' creation myth - play an important role in not only their be?liefs, but their everyday lives and laws as well. Ancestral worship and various other rituals and ceremonies are still held in high regard to this very day.Running HunterThe Aborigines are extremely skilful hunters and are able to run for extended periods of time when chasing their prey. Hunting weapons, such as the boomerang, exemplify their abilities.Uluru (Red Rock)Uluru, also known as Ayers Rock, is a natural sandstone "inselberg" rising 348m above Australia's plains, and is one of the country's most recognisable icons. Uluru is also a sacred place for the local Aborigines. Its history stretches back to Dreamtime, although it did not exist in its current state at that time.Encounter with the White MenUnfortunately, the "White Men" did not realize the significance and importance of the Aborigines and their culture until the end of the 20th century. Before then, they were unaware that the Aborigines were quite possibly one of the oldest known cultures on earth, with a seamless history stretching back to creation itself; Dreamtime. Many of the indigenous flora and fauna have needed to adapt to fire, and evolution has led to unique solutions for survival. £174.99The Graces of Love - Oliver Waespi
"The Graces of Love" (Le Gratie d'Amore) is the title of a book published in 1602 by Cesare Negri, the famous dance master of the Milanese court in the Renaissance. It contains numerous dance tunes and precise descriptions of courtly dances. It also includes the tune 'Il bianco fior' (The White Flower) on which the first movement of Oliver Waespi's piece is based. A vigorous dance in three-four, it leads to an acceleration and a sudden shift to an even meter towards the end. The second movement, calm and contemplative in character, features the tune 'Vaghe bellezze ...' (Veiled Beauty ...). Widely spaced melodic parts surround two solos during which the tune is varied anddeveloped. Finally, the third movement contains a Saltarello based on a tune by Vincenzo Galilei, the father of the famous astronomer, Galileo Galilei. It brings the work to a close with a hypnotic rhythm which is noble and virtuosic at the same time.
