Cousins - Herbert L. Clarke / arr. David Marlatt

Clarke wrote Cousins, a cornet and trombone duet with band accompaniment in 1904 for himself as the cornet soloist and Leo Zimmerman as the trombone soloist. To create a clean new edition, dynamics and articulations were made more consistent in the parts. Other items were changed to reflect the bands of today including F Horn parts rather than E-flat and the percussion parts have been reorganized. This is the first time this work has been available with a full conductor score rather than a piano reduction.

Mango Tango - David M. Martin

A pleasant rendition of a tango for grade 1 band. Once the students have clapped the opening unison rhythm, they will be amazed at how easily it translates to the horn, making this a very fun piece to play and to hear. Some question/answer segments between brass and woodwinds allow the director to stress the importance of listening to musical lines across the band to see how it all fits together as a whole. A terrific addition to the young band repertoire.

Three Susato Dances from - Tylman Susato [Tielman Susato] / arr. David Marlatt

These dances were taken from a much larger suite originally for just four recorders. Style is everything with these short pieces---brilliant fortes are contrasted with smooth lyrical playing. The ensemble must work together to match articulations, dynamics, and style. All the instrument families get a chance to shine and this could also be used as an educational piece to study the Renaissance era and its music.

    Odyssey - David Marlatt

The Odyssey is an ancient Greek epic poem and tells of the events that befall the Greek hero Odysseus on his long journey after the fall of Troy. This feeling of adventure and mystery has been captured in this original work set in three movements. This piece was written in 2007 but now features some advanced parts for flute, clarinet, alto saxophone, and trumpet. These parts add range, technique, and control that is at the grade 3 level. This offers the opportunity for more advanced players to play these parts with more flourishes while the majority of the band can play at a grade 1.5 level.

    The Uprising - David Marlatt

provides ultimate flexibility for ensembles with incomplete instrumentation or odd combinations. These pieces are playable by as few as 5 woodwind, brass, or string players with or without percussion. This creates the opportunity for a mixed quintet to perform these titles but also allows for performance for 10-15 players up to full a band/orchestra with parts doubling. Great for music camps, contest use or any band room that has non-standard instrumentation. is a bold and daring work portraying a group challenging the people in power. This has been staged in 6 programatic sections: "The Current Regime" is noble and confident in character---perhaps too confident. "Next Is the Planning"---the rebel forces begin planning quietly but with purpose and drive. This builds as "The Forces Gather"---louder, stronger, and passionate about their beliefs. This inevitably leads to "Battle!" where the forces collide in combat. Short aggressive bursts of sound lead to "Victory Is Ours," where a new order takes their place in charge. "Celebration" begins and builds to a joyous conclusion.

O Canada (multi-level version) - Calixa Lavallée / arr. David Marlatt

Over the years there have been surprisingly few arrangements of the national anthem of Canada. This version is quite unique and will prove to be extremely useful in all kinds of performance situations. This is not an arrangement for only one difficultly level, it is for four! There are four versions found in everyone's part: All these versions are in the same key and use the same basic harmonies which means they are all completely interchangeable! If you have an excellent trumpet player in your grade 1 1/2 level band, she/he can play the next version up and it will all fit together and sound great! This revolutionary concept means that elementary schools and high schools can own the same set and combine players for a mass band concert. This set of arrangements is ideal for any program no matter what the diversity of talents.

The Maple Leaf Forever - Alexander Muir (1830-1906) / arr. David Marlatt

This rousing and patriotic song was written in 1867, the year of Canada's Confederation. It became very popular and, for many years, was the unofficial national anthem of Canada. The piece opens with a snare drum and gradually introduces the theme in the altos and flutes, while the trumpets play bugle calls that are echoed by the clarinets. This introduction could serve as an opportunity for the choir to "march" into position and be ready for the chorus that appears at the key change. This arrangement is part of a collection for young band celebrating Canada's 150th anniversary since joining Confederation.
