Hoe Down -from Rodeo - Aaron Copland
Aaron Copland (1900-1990) has been called the Dean of American Composers. He was one of the first composers to use American folk idioms in his music. Hoe Down is taken from the ballad Rodeo, composed in 1942. From the ballet,Copland extracted Four Dance Episodes to form an orchestral suite for the concert hall: Buckaroo Holiday, Coral Nocturne, Saturday Night Waltz, and Hoe Down. Hoe Down uses the square-dance tunes of Bonaparte and McLeod's Reel.Polyrhtyhms are derived from the jazz idiom - thus, making the work light, humorous, and full of zest. (3:00)

A century ago, James Causley Windram, then band director of the 5th Northumberland Fusiliers (and later the Coldstream Guards) asked Gustav Holst if he would transcribe some of the composer's Hymns from the Rig Veda for military band. Always a band advocate, Holst readily agreed. In this thoroughly characteristic suite, two of Windram's settings (Hymn of the Travellers and Battle Hymn) have been edited for modern instrumentation, while a third (Hymn to Manas) has been arranged by Jon Ceander Mitchell from Holst's original choral setting.

The subject of this composition is Febal, who - together with his companions - travels to the "otherworld", also known asthe Island of the Blessed, where he finds nothing but sun and prosperity. The sections, called Isle of Joy, Land of the Women and The Feast intermingle with Song of the Otherworld, which acts as a sort of leitmotif.
