From the composer: Nature's Way for intermediate level band was commissioned by BandQuest, a project initiated by the American Composers Forum. Their mission is for major composers of national reputation to write works of high quality that take into consideration the (still comparatively limited) levels of musical development--both technical and conceptual--typical of such ensembles. I eagerly accepted the commission and the challenges implied thereby--that is, to reign in my creative imagination to some extent and limit the technical/conceptual demands to a more moderate level than is to be found in my previous compositions for band. Nonetheless, since the process of rehearsing, studying and performing a work created specifically for the school student market is--and must be, in my view--primarily educational, it was very clear to me that my work would (and should) challenge the players at least to their top levels, and even a little beyond that. Thus Nature's Way in no way represents a compromise of my personal style, nor my long held concepts of form, continuity, texture, and instrumentation. I have known for a long time that young, inquisitive minds are eager to learn from new experiences, from previously never encountered challenges, that is to say, to be pushed--gently--to rise above their present levels of achievement. That's what education is all about. BandQuest, an exciting series of new music and accompanying curricula for band, is a program published by the American Composers Forum. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. The heart of this program is new works written by a diverse group of leading American composers who have created challenging pieces that are a true departure from standard middle school repertoire. Every BandQuest project includes a residency component in which the composer works collaboratively with a middle school as they create their new piece. Many BandQuest pieces are accompanied by an interdisciplinary curriculum designed to assist students as they learn the music and to integrate each piece with non-music studies. The lake region around Buffalo, Minnesota, is one of great geographic beauty and historic significance. Originally part of the region known as the Big Woods, the area was covered with hardwoods that were so thick in their overlapping branches, it was difficult to see the road ahead or sky above. The white elm trees grew to six feet in diameter and up to majestic heights of over one hundred feet.The Dakota People lived and prospered in this area between the lakes for 300 years. Buffalo was a favourite hunting and fishing ground for the Dakotas until the arrival of the first European fur traders and settlers. The richness of the natural resources served as a catalyst for modern development, which led to the very progressive region that continues to grow to this day.Buffalo Dances honours the natural beauty, Native-American heritage and the modern prosperity of Buffalo. Beginning with a majestic fanfare, the piece continues with flowing, Native-American inspired melodies over driving rhythmic figures. The centre of the piece is comprised of a simple original hymn song that reflects on the natural beauty of the region. Accompanied by the sounds of Native-American dance, the intensity returns. If one listens carefully the sound of snorting buffalo can be heard amid the festive atmosphere before the return of the concluding fanfare.

The singer/ songwriter Sondre Justad was born in Lofoten in the north of Norway in 1990. His first album Riv i hjertet was released in 2015, and it became a huge success. He got very fine reviews in some of the largest norwegian newspapers, and the title-song was played frequently on the national radio-stations. The song title could loosely be translated as pulling at my heartstrings, and the song has a deep and dark meaning, with the opening lyrics sounding: If I knew - that I would be dying soon, would I be happy with the way I am living my life

A very exciting and contemporary work that is descriptive of the tragedy that occurred in Central America in 1541 when a long quiet volcano that had filled with water suddenly erupted, sending mud and water covering the city of Ciudad Vieja killing many and completely wiping out the city. The name of that volcano was Agua, which on that day brought whelm on to everything that its waters touched. This is the second published work by young composer Cory McBride and was written when he was a 16 year old high school student. Bold, unique and distinctive, includes solos for flute, tenor sax, bari sax & horn and it's an excellent programming choice for any festival or concert performance by better bands.

"Black Orpheus" appeared as principal theme in the Portuguese-language movie "Orfeu Negro" in 1959. The song appears in various versions throughout the movie. It was the first bossa nova composition to achieve great popularity outside Brazil. It became very popular in the US in particular. Today it is regarded as a jazz standard.This arrangement is a nice solo for sopranosax, altosax or flugelhorn in Latin style. After a groovy slow start, the arrangement changes into a more up tempo samba-like style to the end.

Nar himmelen faller ned (When the sky falls down) is the most famous song by Norwegian singer/songwriter Anne Grete Preus (1957-2019). It was released as single record in 1998 and included on the "Best of" collection "Mosaikk - 16 biter" later the same year. The song was also one of her very first hits as a solo artist. Her great career included many prestigious awards. Most notably are the "Spellemannsprisen" (the Norwegian Grammy) which she won several times. This arrangement was originally written for Preus herself as vocal soloist with Concert Band. In this reworked version, the vocal solo part can be omitted as the melody is spread out in the various band parts. Duration: 4.15

This wonderful march comes with a remarkable history. Originally titled "Governor Bradford March," it was written for orchestra in 1948. 50 years later (1998) Tom Everett, director of the Harvard University Band, discovered Mr. Anderson's manuscript for band among some other old band arrangements! This band version was performed for the first time in 1999 and the recording was used by National Public Radio. This striking yet very playable cut-time march is an excellent addition to the repertoire of classic American marches.
