Chorale and Variations - Philip Sparke
As the title suggests, this piece comprises a set of variations on an original chorale,which is presented in the opening bars.The chorale uses the dark middle and lower sections of the band and is extended with minor variations until a pause leads to the first real variation, marked Vivo. This is in the form of a moto perpetuo. The second variation is a beautiful Andante introduced by a solo clarinet. Following a full band climax the final variation opens with quiet, nervous energy until its main theme is introduced.The chorale makes a brief appearance until the main theme reappears. This leads to a triumphant final augmented statement of the chorale theme, decorated by theflorid clarinet theme in the upper woodwinds. A dazzling new concert work.

£159.99Tirol Terra Fortis - Jan Van der Roost
The Stadtmusikkapelle Wilten-Innsbruck (Austria) invited Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost to write a work to mark the bicentenary of the Tyrolean fight for freedom, which was settled in 1809. Various musical elements reflect this historical event. First, a hymn-like section rings out, based on melodic fragments from the 'Tiroler Landeshymne' (by Leopold Knebelsberger), which intertwine in a counterpoint-like arrangement. The second passage is more bellicose in character, and mirrors the fight of the Tyroleans - under the inspiring leadership of freedom fighter Andreas Hofer (1767-1810) - against Bavarian, French and Italian troops. Next, a broad, chorale-style melodyappears again: here, the imposing beauty of nature in Tyrol, and the amiable, lively temperament of the people who live in this mountainous region, are glorified.This is neither a programmatic work around an historical reconstruction, nor a politically inspired work: it is a combination of factual and cultural components, with an artistic and sonorous character. The use of the flugelhorn in particular gives Tirol Terra Fortis its 'couleur locale': for this beautiful instrument can invariably be found in the Austrian wind band. The commissioning music society had therefore specifically asked the composer to incorporate the instrument in this work. It certainly enhances the already extensive colour palette of the modern concert band!

Composed in remembrance of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., the title of this dramatic setting is taken from a biblical passage and quoted by Dr. King in his celebrated I Have a Dream speech in 1963. After a fanfare-like introduction, the piece is comprised of three sections. The Dream relects on Dr. King's famous speech. This is followed by Strife, which recalls the violence of the civil rights movement, and finally Hope, which looks to a brighter future and is a setting of the hymn We Shall Overcome. The Last Queen of Egypt. Queen Cleopatra ruled Egypt for over 20 years. She is one of antiquity's best-known women, in particular because of her relationships with Julius Caesar and, above all, Mark-Anthony, but also because the cause of her death remains a mystery. The work is split into three parts and performed without breaks. The first section begins with a bright introduction representing Mark-Anthony. Dynamic in nature and reminiscent of military music, this characterises the Roman general. But soon after, another theme emerges, softer and more melodic, symbolising Cleopatra's femininity. The two characters then combine on a faster tempo. The middle section of the work depicts the love that Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra feel for each other. This passionate relationship lasted ten years and produced three children. This is expressed by a warm and intense theme, just like the beauty of the Egyptian queen. The third and last section opens in a determined and military mood. Mark-Anthony and Cleopatra were often apart, the Roman general was often away on a campaign. They met up in Alexandria to celebrate their triumph. But, as the targets of the jealousy and ambition of Octavius, Julius Caesar's son, the lovers are trapped and await the inevitable conquest of Egypt by the Romans. When Mark-Anthony heard the false news that Cleopatra had committed suicide, he ended his own life. The Queen of Egypt, for her part, was imprisoned shortly afterwards. The two lovers remain one of History's most famous couples. This piece was commissioned by the Wind Orchestra of the town of Antony, near Paris, directed by Philippe Rossignol, to mark its 90th anniversary. Duration: 10.00

Fascinated by the beauty of Chicago, Franco Cesarini has translated his emotions into music: this is how Symphony No. 3 "Urban Landscapes" Op. 55, was born, a musical portrait of this metropolis overlooking Lake Michigan. The composition is divided into three movements: The Wrigley Building from Dawn to Noon, Blue Silhouette and Cloud Gates, which by sharing the same thematic material arranged in cyclical form, strengthen the overall cohesion of the piece. The first movement, preceded by a short slow introduction in which the main theme is presented in an almost dreamlike form, metaphorically represents the city at dawn. The sudden change of time symbolizes the start of activities with all its noises and sounds: you can hear the bell that announces the closing of the subway doors, the sound of cars speeding by, the siren of a patrol car. If the first movement represents the day, the second introduces a nocturnal environment: a melancholic melody played by the English horn anticipates a more animated tempo depicting melodies coming from jazz clubs. Powerful fanfares that take up the second theme of the first movement introduce the third movement. In this finale, the role of the two themes is reversed compared to the first movement and one takes the place of the other in a kind of games of mirrors. The Book of Urizen is a work for concert band, solo soprano, and a male narrator in which sound collages of religious expressions are used. The piece is inspired by the compelling visionary poem of the same name (which the poet illustrated himself) by the Englishman William Blake (1757-1827), who occupies a unique position in western literature and the visual arts. He was not just a poet and a writer, but he was also a graphic artist, a painter, an illustrator, a spiritualist, a religious visionary, and a mystic philosopher. For the performance of this work, a professional sound system, including two microphones and a CD player, is needed. The three sound collages are three separate tracks on the enclosed CD and can be played easily at the right moment.The Book of Urizen bears resemblance to Genesis and Exodus, of which the contents form the basis of the Christian, Jewish, and Islamic faith. Blake adhered to the principle that all religions are in fact one, and that deities reside in human beings. In The Book of Urizen this is represented in "The Net of Religion," which is spanned over the earth by Urizen. The sound collages, compiled by Jacob de Haan in the studio, find their origin in Jerusalem, the Holy City, where the afore-mentioned faiths come together.The first two movements, The Vision and The Creation, are available in a separate set.
