Lament and Tribal Dances - Michael Sweeney
Commissioned by the Iowa Bandmasters Association, this dynamic work from Michael Sweeney is written in three contrasting sections. The opening Lament features a plaintive horn melody and expansive harmonies. The mood then shifts to an intensely rhythmic dance using an unusual modal scale. In the final section, the flutes switch to recorders and a driving percussion ostinato figure helps propel this magnificent piece to a dramatic ending. A rewarding and satisfying work from one of today's best composers for young bands.

Porgy and Bess (Medley) - George Gershwin
The music from the timeless masterwork Porgy and Bess has fascinated generation after generation. Oddly enough, at its premiere the critics presented mixed reaction: some calling it the pioneering work of a new folk-opera genre, and others condemning it as merely a succession of hit songs. Fortunately, time has secured its place in history. James Barnes has skillfully crafted a wonderful scoring of "I Got Plenty O' Nuttin'," "It Ain't Necessarily So," "Summertime," "Crab Man," and "Bess, You Is My Woman Now." This is Gershwin at his best! (8:30)

Bones in the Stores (Trombone Section feature with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This arrangement for trombone section and band combines two well-known wartime songs The Quartermaster's Store and Bless 'em all to give the trombone section a thorough workout as well as a lot of fun. The Quartermaster's Store is a traditional song from England. The origins of both tune and words are uncertain and may actually date back as far as the English Civil War. The origins of Bless 'em All are also unclear. The words have been credited to Fred Godfrey in 1917 set to music composed by Robert Kewley but earlier versions of the song may have been in existence among British military personnel in the 1880s in India. It was first recorded by George Formby Jr in 1940 and became a patriotic song.Duration: 2.45

Galloping Home (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - King, Denis - Longhurst, Clive
Galloping Home is the name of the theme tune to the popular 1970's TV programme, 'The Adventures of Black Beauty'. The children's show ran between September 1972 to March 1973 and became a 'must watch' in the UK and the USA. It is hoped that this transcription will evoke many happy memories for those who used to watch it and be enjoyed by those who are not so familiar.

Song of Love and Loss (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
Sorrowful songs appeal to the composer. In this one the 'white' line of the theme is decorated by other instruments as the music proceeds from the minor to the major and then back again. The music is essentially cold and austere in the simplicity of its expression while the decorations do their best to provide colour and warmth.Duration: 3.45

Nearest Thing by Far to Heaven (Flute Solo with Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
An expressive solo for flute and band, this slow, blue-tinged piece is the result of the opportunity given by the Covid lockdown of 2020 to look anew at some old songs. In this one, a fairly straightforward but expressive melodic line is stated in its original form then repeated in a much expanded and occasionally florid setting, allowing the soloist to cover a range from low C up to top A. Eventually the music returns to the tranquillity of the opening. The band accompaniment was written in 2024 and is kept light but colourful allowing the soloist to be expressive without fighting to project through the texture.Duration: 3.45

The Awesome Beauty of Nature (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Wiffin, Rob
This starts with quiet clusters and then expands with power and grandeur, reaching its powerful peak and then receding into the distance. This music is not technically difficult but always requires good control and fine tone.Duration: 5.00

Four Irish Dances (Prestige Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Arnold, Malcolm - Rogers, Ron
Malcolm Arnold's Four Irish Dances are from the latter stage of his career. The 1986 piece complements his other regional dance suites for orchestra, including Cornish, English and Scottish dances, though it darker in mood and colour. Stomping brass and drums in the opening Allegro con Energico give way to two spare middle movements: a Comodo made from anguished melodic imitation and a lilting Piacevole with eerie solo piccolo and miniature trio for trumpets. The 11 minute piece concludes with a wild, contrapuntal jig in triple time. The original orchestra version of the work was premiered at the Leeds Castle Festival on 10 October 1987, by the Wren Orchestra conducted by the composer.
