£149.99La Quintessenza - Johan de Meij
La Quintessenza is a musical approach of the quintessence, the heart of the matter. By focusing a five note motif in a number of variants, De Meij tries to get through to the essence of the musical matter. The core of the composition is a lyrical middle part (Arioso), preceded by an opening fanfare for brass (Introduzione) and a burlesque variant on the same motif (Capriccio). In the fourth part (Alla Marcia) this main motif is only used as an ambient signal, and in the Finale the opening theme is repeated so the musical walk-round is complete.

MASQUERADE was commissioned by Stadtmusik Willisau from Switzerland (Reto Gdel, conductor) to celebrate their 175th anniversary in 2003 and first performed by them in November that year. 1. OvertureThe first movement opens with a fanfare-like figure, featuring the brass, before the main them is introduced over staccato chords. After a short, syncopated interlude a legato theme is introduced in the tenor register and material is developed until the music slows temporarily. The opening theme returns and the 'tenor' tune is taken up by the whole band until the opening fanfare returns to close the movement. 2. ElegyThe slow movement opens intensely with a bare two-part theme, whichleads to a passionate chorale-style melody. A second theme is introduced and leads to a climax, a return of the chorale theme and a pianissimo repeat which again leads to a full-band climax. The two-part theme returns quietly to create a peaceful close. 3 InterludeA short movement which changes the mood to introduce:- 4 FinaleThree violent chords preface a lively syncopated opening theme. The trumpets introduce a second idea, which is treated fugally, and this in turn leads to the main melodic idea of the movement, over staccato chords. A contrasting subject is then introduced in the middle of the band, followed by echoes of the first movement fanfare. The opening theme returns and material is revisited until the opening fanfare returns in full to end the work triumphantly.

Praise Jerusalem! - Alfred Reed
A major work of lasting importance for the modern symphonic band or wind ensemble by this acknowledged master of the medium. This set of variations on a 7th Century Armenian Communion Easter hymn calls forth every possible sound, color and tonal effect, showing off the winds, brasses and percussion of the modern band in all their glory. Filip Ceunen's latest concert piece takes us on a journey back through time and explore the ancient Italian city of Pompeii. Through three interlocking movements, the composer creates a musical tale of Pompeii's humble beginnings, its growth and splendour under Roman rule and, of course, the terrible eruption of Mount Vesuvius. This piece is ideally suited for both concerts and competitions alike, with its many contrasting musical characters and orchestration that brings each section of the band to the foreground. Powerful brass passages, lyric melodies in the woodwinds and exciting percussion sections make Pompeii an exciting musical mountain to climb.

This three-part work was commissioned by Kunstfactor--the Dutch Institute for Amateur Art. Its purpose is to further the repertoire for solo percussionist and orchestral accompaniment--whether brass band, fanfare orchestra or wind band. For a good performance, the soloist should be well-versed in a variety of techniques, and should have a good understanding of the instruments not only technically, but also musically. In terms of the selection of instruments and also technique, the first and second movement are more classical in style, while the final movement--with a set-up of various so-called 'untuned' instruments--is more suited to contemporarysolo kit playing. These distinctions will become clear to the soloist while studying the piece. The Dutch town of Weert was originally (in 1062) called Wherta and is derived from the Dutch word 'Waard'. The small town's value is its high location in the middle of a marshland. The work describes the history of how Belgium and the Netherlands fought a long battle to gain possession of the town during the revolution in the Low Countries in the 16th century. To illustrate this, Willy Fransen brought together parts of the Dutch and the Belgian national anthems in a subtle manner. This work is dedicated to the Municipal Brass Band of Weert.

Suite (From Der Rosenkavalier) - Richard Strauss
Richard Strauss (1864-1949) is mainly known for his symphonic poems such as Don Juan, Also Sprach Zarathustra, Ein Heldenleben,... However, he also wrote many operas and "Der Rosenkavalier" (created in 1911 in Dresden) with a libretto by Von Hofmannsthal is probably the most popular of them all. In our "Jan Cober Series", we would like to present this very special arrangement of the suite from "Der Rosenkavalier". Jan Cober worked extensively on this arrangement and carefully composed this new suite. In this respect, he preserved the necessary mood and vitality of Strauss's music so it could be played by a brass band. He has done this without losing sight of the musicaltension of the original.
