MUSIC FOR AROSA (Prestige Concert Band - Score only) - Sparke, Philip

This work was commissioned in 1996 by the Arosa Cultural committee and first performed in Arosa in that year. The majestic introduction opens with trombones and euphonium, heralding a legato theme, chorale-like in character. A pair of flutes introduce a new theme. A trumpet introduces a series of highly syncopated solos, which feature many metre changes, and the tempo increases when playful motifs are exchanged between various sections of the band. A solo clarinet introduces an expressive tune. A brass chorale follows, with interruptions from the flute and bassoon, until the clarinet tune is played by the whole band. This reaches a climax and the mood subsides to reach a quiet horn chord. The broad legato tune returns and the excitement increases until the march theme triumphantly returns to full band. This leads to the coda which is based on the opening fanfare and closes the work emphatically. (Grade 5) Performance time 11'01" (Recorded on QPRM138D BREAKING THE CENTURY, Central Band of the Royal Air Force)

SPECTRUM (Prestige Concert Band Extra Score) - Vinter, Gilbert - Newton, Rodney

Extra Score. SPECTRUM. This work caused much consternation when it was used as the brass band test piece at the 1969 British Open Competition. The score is an uncompromising one and as colourful as its title suggests. The various episodes of the work are each named after a colour from the spectrum - Red, Orange, Yellow, Green, Blue, Indigo and Purple (changed from Violet when Vinter became conscious of his failing health). It is a piece of violent mood swings challenging all sections of the band. Many consider this to be the finest of Vinter's small output for band. Duration: 12:40 Recorded on Polyphonic QPRM151D Time Lines (Great British Music for Wind Band Vol.12)

Virginia Wind Band Set (Score & Parts)

This expressive piece depicts three periods that play an important role in the history of the American state of Virginia, the colonization, slavery, and the American Civil War. The first movement describes the adventures and hardships of the first colonists through lively American sounding themes. The expressive slow movement, in which a melancholic minor theme forms the starting point, depicts, with clever use of blues elements, the oppressed slaves on the tobacco plantation. This is followed by a illustration of the Civil War, heralded by ceremonial figures from the brass section. The work is brought to a close with a slow but optimistic theme heralding hope for the future. 0:09:10

WARM-UP FUNDAMENTALS FOR CONCERT BAND - Balmages & Gausline

Warm-up Fundamentals was conceived as a tool for directors to use as part of a daily ensemble routine. It covers important fundamental concepts such as breathing, long tones, interval slurs, articulation, flexibility, chords and chorales. Each section breaks concepts down to their most fundamental elements before integrating them together. This gradual approach to the ensemble warm-up helps extend the practical applications of these exercises well into rehearsals and performances. Each instrument part fits on one folded piece of paper, so it's extremely practical in size and can easily fit inside a folder without issue. These warm-ups are also ideal for guest conducting appearances such as honor bands, where conductors need to achieve a uniform sound in a short amount of time. Topics include: Breathing - Build breath support and lung capacity; Long Tones - Approached with phrasing in mind; Interval Slurs -- Both descending and ascending; Articulation - Designed to promote air flow in addition to clarity and speed; Flexibility - Octave studies for woodwinds and lip slurs for brass; Chorales - Progressive chorales that begin with small interval movement and short phrases to allow focus on sound and intonation; Balance - Focus on section, instrument family and full ensemble; Phrasing - All exercises are designed with ensemble phrasing in mind; Efficient - No big part books! Individual parts easily fit into folders and allow for quick navigation to save rehearsal time; Practical - Ideal for guest conducting appearances; Introductory Text - Discusses each section in detail and provides suggestions

    Forgotten Children - Peter Meechan

Forgotten Children is a short work for wind orchestra and electronic accompaniment. Adapted from it's original form (for brass quartet and CD, Forgotten Children was written for The Desert Winds and their conductor Chuck Maguire, to whom the piece is dedicated.Whilst conceiving the piece, the subject of the war in Syria dominated news headlines, specifically the refusal by Western nations to intervene. There were, of course, political reasons at the heart of the decision, complicated by a situation that no one understood in a country no one understands. The harrowing images of chemical weapons being used on children was seemingly not enough to persuade the West that their help was needed, but those silent voices fell on even deafer ears. They were, and still are, the Forgotten Children. Please download the electronic accompaniment below.
