A Future Celebration (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Houben, Kevin

Future Celebration was composed on the occasion of the 125th anniversary of the Royal Socialist Wind Band 'De Toekomst' from Sint-Niklaas (Belgium). In this colourful compostion Kevin Houben succeeds in evoking the bustling textile and cigar industry of the nineteenth and twentieth century in this East Flemish city Sint-Niklaas. After all, these crafts were characteristic for the wealth they brought to the city. Still testimony of this are the 2 unique (niche)museums in Sint-Niklaas: the Knitwear museum and the Pipe and Tobacco museum. Even in times of great crises eg. during the Interbellum the city continued flourishing proving the unique collection of classified art deco houses, amongst others the former People's House, in which the Royal Socialist Wind Band still rehearse. This historic background of Sint-Niklaas and of the Wind Band in particular has been musically presented by Kevin Houben in Future Celebration. The brief, but energetic and powerful opening of the work by the brass instruments gives musical expression to Sint-Niklaas as a prosperous city. After the presentation of a majestic and lyrical theme by the woodwinds an allegro with a cheerful theme takes a look at the future, hopefully looking at the next milestones/ celebrations the city and its orchestra are still expecting in the future. The Pied Piper of Hamelin (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Schwarz, Otto M.

Stories, sagas and legends--who among us don't know them? Always delivered with a tinge of brutality, these cautionary tales are a legacy of moral education from times past: inquisitive children alone in the forest are generally eaten by a witch; the 'Soup-Kasper' of Hoffmann's Struwwelpeter dies from starvation rather than eating his soup; anyone letting in strangers usually gets devoured; anyone who plays with matches gets burned; and thumb-suckers get their thumbs cut off. The list of unfortunate demises is almost endless. In the tale of The Pied Piper of Hamelin, parents lose their children through greed, ridicule, scorn and a failure to appreciate art. There is still a street in the town of Hamelin in which neither drumming nor playing has not been allowed since 130 children disappeared into a mountain, never to be seen again. This composition by Otto M. Schwarz opens with exactly this scene, taking us back to the year 1284. As in many towns at the time, Hamelin in Germany suffered with hygiene problems--rats and mice began to multiply rapidly, and the town was overrun with the plague. There appeared a man dressed in colourful clothes who promised the locals to free them from this burden. They agreed and settled on a fee. Then the man pulled out a pipe and began to play. When the rats and mice heard this, they followed him. He led the animals into the Weser River, where they all drowned. Back in town, the people refused to pay him. They didn't recognise this man's skills and knowledge and were only prepared to pay for simple labour. A pact with the devil was made, which led to the Pied Piper leaving the town in a furious rage. One Sunday, when many people were at church, he returned, took out his flute and began to play. The town's children were so enchanted by his playing that they followed him. He led them out of the town and disappeared with them forever into a mountain forever. Of all the children, only two survived--however one was mute, and one was blind. In the street from which the children left Hamelin, music may no longer be played in memory of this event. The work may be performed in two different versions: 1. Purely instrumental (without narrator)--the GPs (pauses) must be kept short 2. With narrator--he speaks in the GPs but not during the music.Duration: 14.15

Funky MacDonald (Flexible Ensemble - Score and Parts) - Fjermestad, Svein

Funky MacDonald is originally the second movement from a larger work called Jaeren. The piece is intended to describe the scenery at the south-western part of Norway called Jaeren - all with a little humorous twist. In this fresh arrangement, we meet the cool animals and the farmers living at Jren. In the melody, the middle parts (finally!) get a chance to shine. Together with a funky drum beat, the Old MacDonald has never been this funky! The composer has drawn inspiration from the old nursery rhyme Old MacDonald as well as music by James Brown, Deep Purple, Seagull by Bad Lip Reading and also the old band classic, Arctic Funk by Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. A good mix for all tastes!Duration: 3.30

Arabian Sandscapes (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Galante, Rossano

Arabian Sandscapes by Rossano Galante is a stunning work that opens with a bold, unison statement of the main theme by the brasses. After the introduction, a rhythmic ostinato follows in the winds, which, by adding the horns and trumpets, creates an even more heroic feel. The piece then yields to a lyrical, plaintive theme for a contrasting section of this emotional work. A recapitulation of the main theme drives the piece to a riveting climax depicting the faraway lands of Arabia. Duration: 5.15

Circius (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Aagaard-Nilsen, Torstein

The title refers to a description of the wind of the north made by Olaus Magnus who lived in the 16th century. He drew maps describing people, animals, weather, winds, sea monsters etc. The map Carta Marina was unprecise, but the best they had. But he never visited the places himself. In the map over northern parts of Norway, he describes the wind "Circius" as the worst of all winds. The fast sections refers to the wind. In the middle section I borrow a folksong-like tune by Catharinus Elling (1858-1942). The text by Kristoffer Janson, tells about fishermen in small open boats. When they faced the force of nature they could do nothing but put their lives in the hand of God. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen

Labyrinth for Symphonic Band (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - Aagaard-Nilsen, Torstein

I wrote Labyrinth to celebrate the 450th anniversary for the city of Fredrikstad. The Danish king Fredrik II agreed to establish a new town further down the river Glomma, to make it easier to defend from the Swedes. The piece is a network of quotations mixed with my own pitch material. My versions of the quoted melodies are not authentic, and sometimes hard to recognize. However, the different quotations give the music an aura of tonality. For example, a dance tune composed by the Flemish composer Mattheus Le Maistre (1505-1577). The melody also occurs in the first danish book of hymns written after the reformation. Since Norway for 400 years was a part of Denmark and everybody had to write and read Danish, they used much of the same music, too. I also use regular Danish hymn tunes and quote from a religious folk song from the area around Fredrikstad. The military signals I use are authentic (for example, The Old Danish March), and I am very sure they were used in the Old Town (the fortress) of Fredrikstad. The drums quote from The Downfall of Paris. This could have been heard played by professional soldiers hired by the Swedes from Scotland. This edition is a revised version made in 2020. - Torstein Aagaard-Nilsen. Duration: 23.00

Rosa Gallica (Concert Band - Score and Parts) - De Haan, Jacob

Rosa Gallica has been written to commemorate the centenary of the First World War. The work focuses largely on France as a lot of the fighting took place there. With the title Rosa Gallica (French rose), the composer wishes to emphasize the poetic image of the rose. The stem represents the years gone by - such as those taken up by the First World War - and the thorns refer to the conflict and the pain that the victims had to endure. The rose itself forms the picture of beauty - and symbolises opening up to a peaceful world. The piece depicts France from the end of the 19th century through to its role at the heart of the First World War and beyond. A spectacular and dramatic new work by Jacob de Haan. Duration: 8.30
