Symphony No.2 contains four movements and a coda, all played without a break, following the traditional symphonic pattern. The Introduction presents the main thematic material of the piece which is characterized by rising and falling 5ths a semitone apart. The Quaver Machine has a repeated, relentless constant quaver pulse from the vibraphone. The harmony circles around only 3 chords and the section builds with more and more instruments being played in harmony and in canon. A shift in tonality gradually leads to Adagio, an almost opulently romantic presentation of the main theme with a rippling accompaniment. After a massive climax, the music leads to Finale with the main theme presented as an Ostinato gradually introducing the full band to another large climax. Gradually, everything quietens down for the Coda, a varied repetition of the Introduction but ending with a last reminiscence of the Adagio. Duration: 14 mins.

The Nuts and Crackers Sweet
Shaffer has risen to a higher level of musical misquotation with this adaptation of Tchaikovsky's famous ballet, Nuts and Crackers. David has lovingly orchestrated three of the most best known movements from the ballet: March of the Rin Tin Tin Soldiers, Dance of the Thoroughly Modern Mirlitons, and the Russian Hat-rack Dance (Ho Ho Hopak). At one time the Red Kite was close to national extinction in the UK but now it is possible to admire this distinctive bird of prey with its red colouring and forked tail. I love watching it soaring so gracefully through the sky. I attempted to catch that feeling in this solo composed for Martin Smith. In writing it I had in mind making the euphonium glide solitary and effortlessly, occasionally swooping down then reclaiming its high altitude.To create the desired atmosphere, I avoided too many root position chords and enhanced the feeling of floating by adding notes to a lot of the harmony, giving it subtle colour. The harmonic rhythm is slow but the movement switches in the way that the Red Kite can make slight changes of direction by minor adjustments of its tail. On top of this accompaniment the soloist is left to sing with a sense of grace and freedom.- Rob WiffinDuration: 3.45
