Istvn Bogr's series of movements intended for youngsters is colourfully instrumented, evocative music, rich in melodic invention; in character it is most closely akin to Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker ballet music. In the opening movement (Little march), little boys wearing paper shakos on their heads and carrying wooden swords play at soldiers. The following movement, Humming, is the only movement in the suite that is calm and in odd-numbered rhythm; in it the children gather flowers in their little baskets, and meanwhile hum pleasant tunes. The third movement is a funny game, with its tempo sometimes speeding up, sometimes slowing down, but by the end really going wild.The title of the finale is Game of tag. The tiny formal sections and interludes in this lively, cheerful music are linked together by a recurring rondo theme, and the chase ends with a brief coda.

First Light - Steven Bryant
The title First Light refers to the arrival of dawn - specifically the composer's experience of dawn in the mountains surrounding Lake Garda in northern Italy. There, the light of the sun arrives in distinct stages: the night sky begins to brighten quite early, though the sun remains hidden behind the mountains for several hours. Abruptly, the first direct ray of sunlight crests the mountaintop, bringing with it intense, palpable heat. The town below, nestled in the narrow space between the water's edge and the steep mountain slope, remains in darkness for a while longer, until the sun ultimately sends light cascading down the mountainside, illuminating everything. Adding to the minuscule number of Klezmer pieces for concert band, Nonantum Bulgar is the 20th piece published in the BandQuest series. The title, Nonantum Bulgar, refers to Nonantum, a district in Newton which is home to the city's oldest synagogue (on the National Register of Historic Places), and bulgar (pronounced 'bull-ghar'), a type of Klezmer dance. When writing the piece, the composer imagined the dedication of the Adams St. Shul, which took place over one hundred years ago and featured a prominent Boston cantor and choir and a klezmer orchestra leading a Grand March down Adams St. This upbeat work is fun to play, features a trumpet solo, and gives every instrument the opportunity to play the melody. The series was started as a response to feedback from music educators that there is a pressing need for new, fresh band music. Perfect Trip derives its title from the horse racing term which refers to the flawless performance of a winning steed. It was written for the 20th anniversary concert of the Ridgewood Concert Band in New Jerseyat the request of the band's founding director, Dr. C. Christian Wilhjelm. The piece itself lasts not much more than a typical one mile horse race and depicts the event from the observer's perspective: the initial burst of energyat the starting gate and the ensuing excitement approaching the first turn, the suspense as the race develops along the far stretch, and the increasing drama as the pack rounds the final turn and heads down the stretch for the bigfinish. Recorded by the Ridgewood Concert Band, Christian Wilhjelm, conductor. (Grade 4)
