    Masked - Alex Shapiro

Masked by Alex Shapiro is composed in the exact shape of a Classical Minuet and Trio waltz, though the music--a whimsical if somewhat demented masked ball (or, balls, in this case)--bears little connection to that of Mozart or Haydn. Historically, third movement Minuets gave way to the joke-like Scherzo, and the Trio section tips its hat to some welcome levity. This is one of four movements in Suspended, a piece is composed in the tradition of an 18th century Classical symphony: four contrasting movements which serve specific functions and reveal a story. The work begins in absolute rage and chaos, then alternates between moments of grief and bleakness. Grim reality shifts to a macabre, circus-like insanity, and by the end, flickers of genuine hope contrast a pervasive sense of dread, and finally arrive at more optimistic possibilities. To perform the piece, you'll need an audio system capable of playing the prerecorded audio tracks from a laptop computer via a small digital audio interface connected to an audio mixer. Download information is provided in the printed piece.

    Commonwealth - Robert Sheldon

Located in the Commonwealth of Virginia, Fairfax County has quite an interesting story to tell, from the times of the Revolutionary War to the Civil War, to its prominent position as one of the premiere suburbs of our nation's capital, and most populous jurisdiction in Virginia. This piece serves to acknowledge the history of this region while representing its vibrancy and character. The opening patriotic soundscape offers a backdrop to the energetic piece that follows. A juxtaposition of those themes brings the piece to a close.

Wings to Fly - Thomas Doss

This piece was composed for the youth wind band at the Marienschule in Saarbrcken, Germany. The title praises the importance of an education emphasizing freedom, responsibility and getting to know and accepting one's limitations in order to become a well-educated and good-hearted citizen. During the piece, the composer refers to aspects of a typical school-age experience, such as friendship, disappointments, challenges, values and goals. The point is that education gives us all 'Wings to fly'. This is a noble piece, full of variety, with nice sections for all instrumental groups.

    Friendly Takeover - Oliver Waespi

Friendly Takeover was composed for the 2016 Swiss Wind Band Convention in Montreux. In this three movement piece the composer experiments with lyrical motives combined with rhythmical pulses in different meters throughout the piece. In the finale, the musical scene is taken over completely by groove-based rhythms. This takeover, however, is of a friendly nature, as the various beats are not being conceived as rivals of the lyrical motives, but are rather supposed to infuse energy and vitality to the latter. Thus, one gets the impression of an ongoing acceleration throughout the piece.

    Race Car - Scott Watson

The skill and thrill of auto racing is captured musically in this piece via its infectious groove and exciting syncopations. Written in one continuous movement, its sections will help you imagine sitting behind the wheel of a powerful and agile racing machine over the course of a breathtaking speed contest. Students performing this piece will enjoy discovering that the palindromic nature of the piece, including the title, Race Car (which reads the same forwards and backwards), a pervasive syncopated ostinato rhythm, A-B-A form, and a fugato section at the center of the work (Pit Stop), in which virtually each instrumental part is a palindrome! The Glenmasan Manuscript - Marc Jeanbourquin

The Glenmasan Manuscript is an historic Scottish manuscript from the fifteenth century that contains legendary Celtic texts from the Ulster region. In his composition, Marc Jeanbourquin has evoked the atmospheres and illustrated thelandscapes, as well as legendary heroes from this country, through music. The extraordinary spectacular finale is certainly one of the reasons this piece is both suitable as a challenging contest piece as well as a concert piece.

    Stonewood - Paul Curnow

This piece works beautifully for concerts, festivals, or as a ceremonial work. It will become a staple of your Grade 1 music library. The thrilling opening fanfare sets the stage for an ennobling Woodwind theme. There is a lot of dynamic interest as additional instruments reinforce the sound and combine into a glorious and unified statement.Consider this one for use with large groups too, such as massed bands. The grand nature of the piece lends itself perfectly to that arena. A brilliant fanfare-style ending brings the piece to a forceful conclusion.Stunning!

A Jupiter Fantasy (from the Planets) - Yasuhide Ito

Utilizing the melody from the central section of Holst's "The Planets: IV. Jupiter", I have exclusively written a chorus piece for an event in 1999. Based on that particular piece, a duo for piano and flute was written the same year. Later, more than a total of 30 renditions were written based on the original piece. This version of "Jupiter", arranged for the large wind band, is one of three parts of a three-part composition, which includes "Mars" and "Earth", composed in 2003 and 2005 respectively. The trumpet ad lib kicks off the central section, in which various other instruments could repeatedly perform the section, and ad lib is most welcome too.(Yasuhide Ito)

    Caroling - Timothy Johnson

Fragments of eight different well-known Christmas carols go into this enjoyable arrangement. See if your audience can name them all. The carols are conveniently arranged so that they can be played at one consistent tempo throughout, which helps you make the most out of your young band's limited rehearsal time. A variety of articulations and dynamics help to make the piece a teaching tool as well as an enjoyable performance piece. Interesting Percussion colors, with easy substitution suggestions, also help to make the piece sound harder than it is. Effective!

Musica Helvetica - Jan de Haan

Every year a competition for wind orchestras and brass bands takes place in Wallberg, Switzerland. Apart from a hymn and a solo piece, all orchestras also have a compulsory piece to play. The commission to create a compulsory piece for the 2012 competition fell to Jan de Haan. The composition is entitled Musica Helvetica. It takes the form of a three-part concert work, in which the last two parts flow directly from one to the other. The first part, Musica Prima, is a brisk virtuoso opening with jazz flavours woven in. The following section, Musica Sacra, offers a contrast with an extraordinarily colourful instrumentation for the gorgeous main theme. Thefinal part, Musica Alpina, is inspired by the great variety of scenery in Switzerland. With its witty humour it makes a worthy conclusion to this beautiful tryptich.
