Three Holiday Scenes - Timothy Johnson
An imaginative look at a good old-fashioned Christmas! From aromas of family favorites cooking in the kitchen, to the images of decorated trees, snow scenes, and caroling - all are a part of that wonderful celebration.Rather than just taking the same old Public Domain Christmas carols for one more go 'round, Timothy Johnson has composed the majority of THREE HOLIDAY SCENES using fresh and original melodies. The first scene opens with fragments of "Oh Tannenbaum" but quickly moves into a beautiful Christmas waltz. An "effets de neige," or "Snowfall effect," carries the luscious second and contrasting scene. In the 3rd and final scene, the phrases from well-known carols mergewith one another, creating the effect of "caroling." Finally, melodies serve as counterpoint for one another and bring this delightful vignette to a close. This piece presents an excellent opportunity to work with the Art department in creating drawings and paintings of holiday images. Pull your chair a little closer to the fireplace and sit back for a winsome holiday treat!

London is one of my favorite cities in the world, and in 2016 I was invited there to serve as an adjudicator for the London New Year's Day Parade and Gala Concerts. While I was there, I was fortunate to meet and spend time with The Lord Mayor of Westminster Councillor Steve Summers. While his title sounds formidable and intimidating, I found Steve to one of the nicest, most easygoing people I've ever met. And boy, does he love London! He was fond of saying that he had "the best job in the greatest city in the world." He spoke passionately about London and his favorite places in the city, and his enthusiasm was contagious. Some of his favorite places became some of my favorite places, and the inspiration for this piece. I hope that this work not only conveys the beauty and history of these iconic places, but Steve's deep and abiding love for them as well. I. Tower Bridge - The Tower Bridge was built over 120 years ago to ease road traffic while maintaining river access to the busy Pool of London docks. Its giant moveable roadways lift up for passing ships, making it a true engineering marvel. It is also one of the most iconic sites in London, and was used to display the Olympic Rings during the 2012 Olympics. II. St. Paul's (The Whispering Gallery) - The history of St. Paul's Cathedral goes back well over a thousand years, but construction on the current St. Paul's began in 1669 after a fire destroyed the earlier structure. The dome of St. Paul's Cathedral is a whispering gallery; you can whisper against the wall on the inside of the dome and it can be clearly heard on the other side of the dome over 100 ft. away. Imagine the secrets that have passed there... III. Trafalgar Square - The name commemorates the 1805 naval Battle of Trafalgar and is marked by Nelson's Column, a monument to Admiral Horatio Nelson, the hero of the Battle of Trafalgar. It is the heart of London; full of life and constant energy and home to iconic buildings including the National Gallery, St. Martin-in-the-Fields, Canada House and South Africa House. Londoners say that all roads in London lead to Trafalgar Square.

Norfolk is one of the most beautiful counties in England, famous for its charming villages and boundless broads, a popular centre for sailing holidays. It is also the home of one of the best known of all British composers, Sir Malcolm Arnold. The date of the premiere of this piece was to fall close to his 80th birthday, so Philip Sparke decided to write something of a birthday tribute. Some of Arnold's best-loved orchestral works are his sets of dances: there are two sets of English Dances, Four Scottish Dances, Four Cornish Dances etc., most of which have been arranged for concert band at one time or another. Philip Sparke thought it would be appropriate for the concert band tohave its own set of dances and wrote Four Norfolk Dances very much in the style of Arnold's suites.

The Gilded Theatre - Kenneth Hesketh
The Gilded Theatre was commissioned by the National Youth Wind Orchestra of Great Britain on the occasion of its fortieth anniversary. They gave the first performance on 10th August 2008, at St. John's Smith Square, London conducted by James Gourlay.The Gilded Theatre can, in some ways, be seen as a continuation of dramatic forms as presented in a previous piece by Hesketh, Diaghilev Dances. Unlike the Dances, however the music in The Gilded Theatre is conceived as one continuous span and stretches of music are also subtitled and refer to stock characters or scenarios redolent of the commedia dell'arte or 17th Century French Theatre.The subtitles are Rideau, Les Idiots Ou Les Amants, Le Combat Commence, Desespoir, L'apparition, Folie, La Mort, Rideau. The music narative progresses through dramatic, comedic, romantic and aggressive moods supporting the idea of the abstract play to which the the above subtitles refer. Throughout the piece the composer has sought to challenge the players both technically and emotionally, and it is the players themselves who are in fact the protagonists in the piece.

Movement 3 from SuspendedMasked by Alex Shapiro is composed in the exact shape of a Classical Minuet and Trio waltz, though the music--a whimsical if somewhat demented masked ball (or, balls, in this case)--bears little connection to that of Mozart or Haydn. Historically, third movement Minuets gave way to the joke-like Scherzo, and the Trio section tips its hat to some welcome levity. The work begins in absolute rage and chaos, then alternates between moments of grief and bleakness. Suite in Three MovementsThis piece of music is a commissioned work for Lavangen School band and their band music convention in 2019. The piece was performed under the mountain Spanstind (located far north in Norway) by a band consisting of approx 400 amateur musicians. The mountain Spanstind is 1457 meters high and drops into the valley Spansdalen below, an especially scenic venue.The composition is inspired by the sami joik (folk song) Ru?gu?ohkka, the song to Spanstinden. It is also inspired by the nature of the surroundings. Mvt 1 "Ro" (calmless) describes the feeling of calmness in the midnight sun. Mvt. 2 "Uro" (unrest) describes a scene of wind, snow, avalance and the big forces of nature. Mvt 3 "Storhet" (greatness) describes the feeling of greatness the nature has, and how we experience it as majestic and exalted.The piece can be played with the movements alone, or one can add the signals played by soloist(s) off-stage or in the back of the hall. The signals are to be played before, in between, and after the 3 movements. All instruments can be soloists. The soloist performs the signals rhythmically aleatoric, where each soloist repeats the signal 4 times in his or her own tempo. Signal 1 is played before Mvt 1, signal 2 is played between Mvt 1 and 2, signal 3 is played between Mvt 2 and 3, and signal 4 is played while the band holds the last note (long, use stagger breathing). after a while, all the soloists end on the same note and the music fade out.Duration: 6.30
